βͺοΈAfter years of delay, the Cebu BRT project may finally move forward and civil works can actually start as early (or late) as June 2022.
βͺοΈThis after Sec. Art Tugade met with Department of Transportation (DOTr) Road Sector - Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) team to discuss the developments regarding the construction of a bus rapid transit system in Cebu City.
βͺοΈHe directed the team to expedite the immediate construction of the BRT to help ease traffic conditions, while enhancing the mobility of commuters in Cebu City.
βͺοΈOn the immediate term, Secretary Tugade said that the Notice of Award for civil works contractor should be issued by May 2022. Hence, earth-balling activities for the project should start earlier.
βͺοΈSecretary Tugade stressed that while his term of office nears its conclusion, the construction of the BRT must proceed by June 2022, must be realized, and pushed through.
βͺοΈA 13.18 kilometer busway, the Cebu BRT will traverse from South Road Properties (SRP) through Mambaling up to IT Park with 17 bus stations, one terminal (for Trunk Service), and a depot.
βͺοΈOnce operational, the BRT system is expected to benefit around 60,000 passengers.
βͺοΈAlong with the BRT trunk service, a 22.1-kilometer bus feeder system that will run over mixed traffic, with two feeder terminals and 76 bus stops/shelters shall traverse along the following routes: Cebu IT Park-Talamban (5.2 km); SRP-Talisay via Mambaling (8.7 km); and SRP-Talisay via South Coastal Road (8.2 km).
βͺοΈJoining Secretary Tugade and Secretary Dino during the Cebu BRT meeting were DOTr Undersecretary Giovanni Lopez, Cebu BRT Station Designer Kenneth Cobonpue, Project Manager Engr. Norvin Imbong, Land Transporation Office (LTO) Region 7 Director Vic Caindec and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Region 7 Director Ed Montealto.
