For New Lawyers:

The best thing a new lawyer can do before appearing in court for the first time is to prepare well and seek guidance from more experienced lawyers.

In my case, my first court appearance was in a civil case handled by my father. I appeared with him and asked what I should say. During the hearing for a continuance, I mostly observed how he spoke to the judge and handled the case. Watching him taught me a lot about courtroom behavior and proper procedure.

My first solo appearance was in a criminal case for violation of RA 9165. Before the hearing, I asked my siblings—who are also lawyers—what usually happens during an arraignment and pre-trial conference and what documents I needed to bring. By understanding what to expect, I felt calm and prepared.

When you know the process and come ready, you appear confident and professional. Preparation helps you stay composed, and it leaves a good impression on your client, the judge, and the other lawyers in the courtroom.
