Oppressive heat. Species extinctions. Pollution-choked skies.

This is the future that awaits the world unless humanity takes dramatic steps to end a series of mushrooming environmental crises, according to the Global Environment Outlook — the most comprehensive scientific assessment of the planet to date, developed by 287 experts from 82 countries.

But the report makes it clear: this future is not set in stone. With bold action on climate, nature, pollution, and resource use, we can still change course.

Today, we mark by reflecting on Nelson Mandela's legacy and his belief that lasting change begins with action.

Building inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities means tackling poverty and inequality through adequate housing, basic services and opportunities for all. Together, we can create cities where everyone can live with dignity.

What makes a city truly inclusive?

It's all about who can access opportunities, participate in decisions, and feel like they belong.

Today, cities are home to over half of the world's population, yet too many people continue to face barriers based on income, gender, age, disability, migration status or where they live.

Inclusive cities are designed through intentional planning, investment and governance.

The interventions required also reinforce one another:

- A well-designed public space is only inclusive if people can reach it safely.
- Affordable housing only improves lives when it connects residents to jobs, schools and services.
- And the best urban plans are those created with communities, not just for them.

This people-centred approach is increasingly recognized as essential to sustainable urban development.

Building inclusive cities is a pathway to stronger local economies, greater resilience and healthier communities.

Which of these actions do you think cities should prioritize first?

- Bring together world leaders and experts to solve city problems together
