Workplace Humour | People Managers

Managing people can involve a little bit of everything.

Supporting someone, following up on performance, sorting out a conflict, planning ahead... while still getting your own job done. 😄

The HR PI Podcast | Episode 30 — Who Does the Boss Talk To?

Your staff can talk to their manager. Your managers can talk to you.

Workplace Humour | Organisational Values

Your organisational values are really important.

Just don't ask anyone what they are. 😄

Values become much more useful when people can actually remember them - and understand what they mean in practice.

More on that later this month.

Employment Relations Skills Workshop for Small to Medium Businesses

Managing people well isn't always straightforward.

Setting clear expectations, giving effective feedback, addressing poor performance and managing conflict all require confidence and skill.

I’m covering these topics and more in a practical half-day workshop for the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce, designed for business owners and managers who manage people.

The focus will be on practical approaches and tools you can take back and use in your own workplace.

📅 Wednesday 14 October | 9.00 am–1.00 pm

Personal grievances aren't only about dismissals.
The ERA recorded 1,474 unjustified disadvantage claims in 2025 - a reminder that employment risk can arise while someone is still employed.

“But They’re Really Good at Their Job…”
Managers sometimes assume behavioural expectations are simply “common sense”.
But whose common sense?
If a behaviour matters to success in a role, make the expectation clear — and give specific, timely feedback when it isn't being met.
