Um. Like. Basically. Literally. Obviously. You know.

We all have that ONE word we say far more often than we realise!

And if there's one thing transcriptionists become very aware of, it's filler words. When you're listening to recordings all day, you start noticing just how often these little words sneak into everyday conversations.

But we are curious… which filler word are you guilty of using the most?

You’d be amazed what a microphone manages to pick up during a recording.

Things we hear all the time:

🟣 The enthusiastic keyboard tapper
🟣 The coffee slurper
🟣 The teaspoon that hits the mug approximately 47 times
🟣 The dog who suddenly has VERY important news
🟣 The constant paper rustler
🟣 The door that apparently needs to be slammed shut
🟣 …and that mysterious background noise nobody noticed at the time.

Microphones can be surprisingly sensitive. And when you’re trying to turn a recording into an accurate transcript, all those little sounds can make the actual conversation harder to hear.

You don’t need a professional recording studio, but a quiet room, microphones positioned close to the speakers and a little awareness of background noise can make a big difference.

Although we’ll always forgive the dog.

What’s the most unusual background noise you’ve ever heard on a call or recording?

Our Word of the Month for October is Integrity.

The word comes from the Latin integer, meaning whole or complete, and we think there’s something rather fitting about that.

Integrity is about doing things properly, even when no one is watching. Taking care with the details. Being consistent. Following through on what you say you’ll do. In transcription, that matters.

Our clients trust us with important, and often confidential, information, so accuracy, reliability and care aren’t simply nice to have. They’re part of doing the job properly.

It is a quiet word, but an important one.

We love receiving wonderful feedback like this. Thanks Melissa!

Would you rather read it… or listen to it all over again?

Imagine you’ve got a 60-minute recording and you need to find one small piece of information buried somewhere in the middle.

Do you:

➡️ Skip backwards and forwards through the audio hoping to find the right spot?
Or:
➡️ Search the transcript and find the words you need in seconds?

That’s one of the simplest benefits of having a recording transcribed. The information becomes much easier to search, reference and come back to later.

So, which would you rather choose?
➡️ Listen again
➡️ Search the transcript

Punctuation can save lives!

Let’s cook, Dad.
Let’s cook Dad.

One tiny comma. Very different dinner plans.

It’s a simple example, but it shows why transcription is about much more than hearing words and typing them onto a page.

Punctuation, context and meaning all matter. A comma in the wrong place can completely change what someone is saying, and when you’re working with medical, legal, research or business recordings, getting that meaning right is important.

That’s where the human element makes a difference. We’re not just listening to the words. We’re understanding how they fit together so the finished transcript accurately reflects what was actually said.

Because sometimes, one little comma really does matter.

Do you pronounce it scone or scone? Does it rhyme with gone or cone?

Some other tricky ones can be:

🟣 Day-ta or dah-ta?
🟣 Shed-yool or sked-yool?
🟣 And how do you say garage?

People pronounce the same words in all sorts of different ways, and that’s before you add regional and international accents into the mix.

Over the years, we’ve heard a LOT of different accents and pronunciations at Purple Giraffe. Part of being a professional transcriptionist is listening carefully, understanding the context and making sure we identify exactly what has been said, rather than simply guessing what a word sounds like. Because however you pronounce it, the finished transcription still needs to be accurate.

Now it’s your turn, which word do you pronounce differently from everyone else?

And while we are at it, is it jam then cream, or cream then jam?

That one-hour interview could keep working for you for years.

Once it’s been transcribed, the information inside it becomes much easier to find, use and revisit.

A transcript could become:

🟣 Research material for a future project
🟣 Source material for an article
🟣 A reference for a book or report
🟣 Quotes or insights for content
🟣 A searchable record you can return to months or years later

Because sometimes the most useful part of a recording isn’t the recording itself. It’s what you can do with the information afterwards.

A clear, accurate transcript turns spoken words into something far easier to work with.

If you have recordings sitting there full of useful information, it might be worth turning them into something you can actually use. And of course, here at Purple Giraffe, we can help you do that.

Smith? Smyth? Smithe? Better check the spelling on that one.

Some words are easy to hear. Others need a little more detective work. Names, place names and specialist terminology can all sound perfectly clear in a recording, but that doesn’t mean the spelling is obvious. And when you’re working with medical, legal or research material, getting it “close enough” isn’t good enough. That might mean checking context, researching terminology or confirming whether the person mentioned is a Smith, Smyth or Smithe.

It’s one of those small parts of transcription that takes judgement, not just good hearing.

What’s a name or place you always have to spell out for people?
