𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗭 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀. Since 25 September 2026, both partners must be at least 18 when the visa application is made.

It applies to:
🔹 Partnership-based visitor, work and residence visas
🔹 Culturally Arranged Marriage Visitor Visa

Immigration New Zealand will only look at your 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝟭𝟴 or older. For example, if you were living together while one of you was 17, that earlier time can't be used as evidence.

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀
Couples still need to have lived together for at least 12 months. The new part is that the 12 months can only start counting once you are both 18. So the applicant can't qualify until both of you are at least 19.

𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀
There is no fixed 12-month rule. But you still need enough evidence from after you both turned 18 to show you live together in a genuine and steady relationship. Turning 18 doesn't usually mean you can be approved straight away.

𝗔 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 is to note the date you both turned 18 and start keeping shared records from then. A clear, organised story is much easier to show.

Good news for many people
🔹Visas already granted are not affected.
🔹Resident visa applications sent in before 25 September 2026 are not affected.
🔹The rule doesn't apply to partners included in skilled, business, humanitarian or other non-partnership residence applications, or in general visitor visa applications.

𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗡𝗭 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 visa before you apply? Changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) came into effect this August and one important part of these changes is the "wage threshold", your pay needs to meet it.

𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗪𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹 has launched by Immigration New Zealand and it can:
🔹work out which pay level applies to your pathway
🔹check whether the pay you earned in past skilled jobs meets that level
🔹apply special settings, including a 5-month grace period

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁
You can use it for your current job or job offer, you can also use it for any past skilled work experience you plan to include in your application.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁?
✅ The date your work visa was granted
✅ Your hourly pay for your current job or job offer
✅ The SMC pathway you plan to use and how many points you are claiming
✅ The date you submitted or plan to submit your Expression of Interest (EOI)
✅ Details of your skilled work (start and end dates, hourly pay and any pay changes)

𝗪𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀, because many of these things are in your hands. The best plan is to get it right the first time.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
1️⃣ Choose your course with care. Think about how it fits your past study and your future goals. Different types of providers can have different approval rates, so talk it through before you decide.
2️⃣ Show your money clearly and honestly. Tuition, living costs and return travel should be backed by real documents that are easy to check.
3️⃣ Tell your story: explain why this course, why New Zealand and what you plan to do after you finish.
4️⃣ Send everything at once. If pieces are missing, officers may not ask for them.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮 "𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗲" 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁?
If you're from a visa-free country, have the funds, and genuinely want to visit first (with a return ticket and a real travel plan), you could explore providers, then apply from inside NZ. This way you would have a chance to respond if there is a concern.
Two things to keep in mind:
🔹 You can't start a course longer than 3 months as a visitor.
🔹 Your visa may not be ready in time for your intake.

NZ has a new plan to protect people from being forced and controlled by others. It is called the Trafficking in Persons National Action Plan and was released on 18 September 2026.

𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 is a serious crime. It means a person is controlled and put into situations they did not choose. This can be:
🔹 Forced work
🔹 Being made to commit crimes
🔹 Sexual exploitation
🔹 Forced marriage
🔹 Being made to work in someone's home with no freedom

It can happen to anyone, of any age, nationality or background. It often happens out of public view, which makes it hard to spot.

The Trafficking in Persons National Action Plan has 4 simple goals:
🔸 government, businesses, community groups working together
🔸 looking after people who have been harmed
🔸 spotting the signs early
🔸 people who exploit others are held responsible

Before, this visa was not always available in this way for Graduate Diploma holders. Now, if you meet both conditions (completed a Graduate Diploma in NZ and have a Bachelor's degree), you can get a Post-Study Work Visa that lets you work for any employer, in any job, anywhere in New Zealand for up to 1 year.

𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄
🔹 This will start 16 November 2026.
🔹 Your Bachelor's degree can come from NZ or any other country.
🔹 You'll still need to apply within 3 months of your student visa ending.
🔹 There's no time limit on when you completed that Bachelor's degree, it could have been years ago.
🔹 You'll need certificates and transcripts of both your Graduate Diploma and your Bachelor's degree.

This actually gives you more freedom in how and where you work, instead of being limited to one type of job.

If you complete a qualification in New Zealand (certificate, diploma or graduate diploma) at level 5 to 7 and you studied it full-time for at least 24 weeks, you can then work for 6 months afterward.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀
Right now, many graduates with shorter qualifications simply don't qualify for New Zealand's main work visa after finishing their studies. This new visa fills that gap.

𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄
🔹 This visa can only be used once.
🔹 You don't need a job offer to apply.
🔹 You can work for any employer, in any job, anywhere in NZ.
🔹 You'll need to show you have NZ$5,000 to support yourself.
🔹 You must apply within 3 months of your student visa ending.
🔹 While you're on this visa your partner or children cannot join you.

This is genuinely good news for students as a bridging option. Why? It can give you work experience, income and time to plan your next move. But the key is going in with a plan. Six months moves fast, so knowing your next step before this visa starts makes all the difference.

From December 2026, there will be a new investment choice, called 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴. This means new apartment buildings built to be rented out long-term, not sold off to different owners. If you're applying under the 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝘀 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮 (𝗔𝗜𝗣), you'll be able to put your money into these housing projects through approved managed funds.

𝗪𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗭𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱? There are different ways to do it and they are not connected. Here is how the system works:

First your application joins a waiting list to be invited to apply. There are two ways people get invited:
🔹 Some people wait in line and get invited in the order they joined (first come, first served)
🔹 Some people are chosen by random draw (like a lottery)

Once invited, applications from each group are kept separate. People in the "waiting line" group move at their own pace and people chosen by "random draw" move at theirs. The two groups don't mix and when one group moving doesn't affect the other.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻?
Nobody chooses, it's automatic. It comes down entirely to when the original Expression of Interest was submitted. There's no application, form or preference involved, the date alone decides it.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵?
The "wait in line pool" is based on a simple first-come, first-served order. It is easier to predict, but it only applied to older EOIs. Most of these have already been selected.
The Ballot Pool (random draw) applies to nearly everyone applying today. It's a random draw every 3 months, meaning any application can simply wait for the "luck" of being picked, regardless of when it was submitted relative to others in the pool.

Most of the confusion comes from people assuming there's just one line for everyone but that is not the case. If you understand which group you're in, you'll have more realistic idea of your timeline.

𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿 for one group of visitors with less than a month to switch. From 1 October 2026, paper applications will no longer be accepted for most New Zealand visitor and transit visas. These applications must be submitted through Immigration's online system.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝗳:
🔹 you already submitted a paper application before 1 October, 2026? Nothing changes, it'll still be processed as normal, no action needed.
🔹 applying after 1 October? You'll need to apply online.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀?
For now, paper forms are still accepted for partner and child visitor visas (tied to a worker, student or New Zealander). So, these aren't affected by this change yet.
