The Casa de Tierra team journeyed to El Rama on the east coast of Nicaragua to harvest and cure our new stock of bamboo. We chose two species that are especially suitable for construction: Dendrocalamus Asper and Gigantochloa Apus.

We offer this bamboo in a variety of sizes and forms, including poles, paneling and strips. If you're interested in bamboo for your next project, we are your local source in San Juan del Sur!

The Random Acts wonder team has done it again! They found the funding to construct a much-needed daycare center on the Campus of the Free High School of San Juan del Sur, and they invited us back to build it. We couldn’t be more thrilled, so we’re flashing back to their February trip when they helped us in what we believed were the final stages of the project. And, with today being "Red Nose Day," an initiative dedicated to ending childhood poverty, we found the perfect photo of them to share. We look so forward to collaborating with this spirited all-star team again!

Thank you to the San Juan del Sur Day School for inviting Casa de Tierra’s Jordan Marin to lead a group of students in learning about sustainable building methods, including bamboo, earth bags and adobe blocks. We hope that the young learners enjoyed their day with us as much as we enjoyed teaching them!

Thank you so much to parent Jordan Marin of Casa de Tierra for hosting our Los Rayos at the free high school. Our students learned about bamboo sustainable construction systems and earth blocks and they even had a hand at making adobe blocks.

"To have had a role in constructing this pioneering bamboo campus, and to now be asked to teach engineering and architecture students how to create it themselves, is a dream realized. Casa de Tierra's goal has always been this: to reintroduce environmentally responsible construction materials and methodologies to ensure that we reduce the impact of the built environment on our natural one. In teaching a new wave of students these sustainable techniques, we are fulfilling that mission."

Casa de Tierra’s co-founder Austin Drill has been tapped to serve as the new professor of sustainable construction at the Free High School of San Juan del Sur, and he is thrilled to share his knowledge and his passion in the classrooms that he helped to build.

UPOLI administrators in Rivas have consulted with this institute to organize and teach a certification program in sustainable construction with bamboo.

Casa de Tierra was proud to participate in their natural building fair and share ideas with these inspiring people.

Our natural building fair re-iterated something we’ve come to recognize recently; in the globalized world we live in, a lot of people seem thirsty for projects and experiences that honor culture and the wisdom of tradition, and also offer innovative ideas that can be explored within their own regions and communities. In addition to continuing to advocate for, and build safe and healthy buildings, we are proud to be part of a network of projects and organizations that are focused around bringing people together to find common vision, to exchange knowledge, to support community resilience, and to highlight environmental-impact awareness

"Podemos cambiar el mundo con nuestras propias manos.”

This is what the volunteers of The Union Church in Waban and the children of San Bernadino wrote on their school's mural. It means, "We can change the world with our own hands,” and it was a lesson that we all learned as the Union Church led a group of 52 parishioners to San Bernadino to restore a community health center, paint a school, and plant gardens.

Casa de Tierra was a proud partner in this mission, and oversaw the rebuild of the health center’s straw bale and earthen walls, which allows the community to once again benefit from having their own medical center, while the school’s new bright paint and garden enlivens the student’s environment.

Casa de Tierra had the pleasure of leading Comunidad Connect’s sustainable building workshop with California Polytechnic State University. We were impressed by the student’s enthusiasm and their ability to dive right in with us to create bamboo panel walls for disaster relief kit homes, lay super adobe benches, and construct cordwood walls. We hope that they utilize their newfound knowledge for future eco-friendly projects!

"Our school...this whole campus that we’ve built, it’s probably the most beautiful school in the entire country….I think it’s fair to say, it’s the most sustainable because it’s built out of bamboo, it has a water rain catchment system, and it’s going to have solar panels. It’s going to be a super sustainable facility.”
