Adesina Ademola Ogunlana did not just make us!
He supported us and was there for us through the journey!
I was surprised to see him on the day of my election as the Chairman of the Young Lawyers' Forum despite the hostilities in the Branch at that time.
Baba defied the odds to show up in solidarity with me.
He came under the heavy rain on the 20th of June, 2020.
Baba honoured our invitation for the first Human Rights Committee programme of our administration.

Adieu Adesina Aluta Ogunlana

In 2021 I volunteered and participated in the Informal Justice Court training for Inmates in Ikoyi Correctional Custodial Centre. The programme was championed by Foundation (Netherlands). The moot court sessions opened the minds of the inmates. The impact was massive.

Three (3) years on we have developed our capacities to make a substantial impact in the criminal justice sector with the Foundation for Public Interest Law and Development

A team of lawyers and volunteers from the Foundation for Public Interest Law and Development was at the Ikoyi Custodial Correction Centre yesterday to commence a process that will put smiles on the faces of the incarcerated.

We interviewed 137 inmates awaiting trial who have been detained for within 4 to 11 years. The foundation will analyse these cases, design the best approach and provide legal assistance to the indigent by connecting them to volunteer lawyers willing to render pro-bono legal services.

On Friday, 16th of February, 2024, I honoured the Advocates’ Association, SAA-LASU invitation to the Advocacy Conference 2024 and the Premier edition of the Induction Ceremony to the LASUSU Bar.

After the induction and ā€˜Call to the Bar’ ceremonies, I was invited to charge the new ā€˜students’ union lawyers’ on their responsibilities as ā€˜Legal Practitioners’ reflecting my experience as a young lawyer.

In my pep talk titled ā€˜Now that you have been called to the Bar’, I remember with nostalgia some events during my studentship at Okunuga Hall and Moot Court, that culminated in my virile moot, mock and litigation experience before the Lagos State University Students’ Union Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal that led to the conferment with the rank of ā€˜Senior Advocate of LASU’ in 2013.

I encouraged the students’ advocates citing the all-time quote of Sir Christopher Sapara Williams, on the role of the lawyer to the nation, when he said: ā€œthe legal practitioner lives for the direction of his people and the advancement of the cause of his countryā€. I urged them to see the campus as the county and always aspire to give it a direction even when it requires them to render pro bono legal services.

The event's highlight was Abiodun Fatai; the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY (LASU) comments on my leadership of the Students' Union 10 years ago that once again starred in a teary moment.

It was a pleasure to have shared the podium with eminent lawyers Leresimi Philips Adeleye and Ugochukwu Obed Okocha. I also had the privilege of decorating five (5) Senior Counsels who have distinguished themselves by participating in moot, mock and international competitions.

Thank you David Akinwunmi and Tijani Salaudeen for finding me worthy.

On Monday, the 15th of January, I was invited by the US Consulate Lagos U.S. Mission Nigeria as a Guest Panelist for the MLK Day 2024 symposium. My influence and voice in the Public Interest Law and Sustainable Development advocacy space triggered the invitation.

The event which honours the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. aligns with the U.S. Mission Nigeria’s Goal to ā€œSupport Stronger, Democratic Institutions, Governance, and Respect for Human Rights, revolved around MLK's ideals and legacy - promoting the principles of equality, justice, civil rights, and nonviolent social change.

I shared my thoughts on "Empowering Voices: Reflecting on MLK's Dream and Pursuit of Equality and Justice" on the panel of diverse individuals passionate about social change and justice. The panel consisted of other distinguished youths Aproko Doctor Ruhamah Ifere, Ifenla Jedidiah Oligbinde and Godwin Henry

The audience was impressed by my delivery on how to galvanise social change reflecting the role of Nigeria's legal system on empowering voices. I also shared our work Foundation for Public Interest Law and Development

I am very pleased to share that I made the list of 100 Nigerian most distinguished legal personalities for 2023 compiled by the Legal Eagles Initiatives and L.M.T Academy.

According to the organisers, the platform is meant to reward hard work and celebrate the consistency of legal personalities who have distinguished themselves among their contemporaries with significant contributions to legal education and practice in Nigeria.

Mr. President, Nigeria is Bleeding.

Sometime last week a young lady was interviewed in somewhere in of Lagos State. Her reaction was to the initial partial lockdown announced by Lagos State Government as a measure to contain the spread of the virus. The lady retorted ā€œā€¦so please, I am bleeding for our Governor, our President. They ought to, they can, as in, I am bleeding. So, I am on my knee… they can help us. Corolla virus is something…. as in… I am hearing it right now at Mushin there, are you hearing now? I think you are hearing? The crowd is a lot. Many people is shouting for hungry, for eatingā€¦ā€.

I also joined in the frail and made a mockery of the lady because she couldn’t put the words together properly. But, the position that the young lady maintained is the sad reality today. Are we not bleeding? Can’t you hear the crowd shouting? Don’t we have hunger in land? General Muhammadu Buhari don’t tell me you cannot feel the pulse of Lagos and Ogun State. Even if you do, we will not take that from you.

As I write, the attendant insecurity occasioned by the total lockdown is staring us. Sir, you have botched your part of the social contract by failing to provide palliatives that commensurate the lockdown, and as it were, a relative stable power supply to differentiate the lockdown from detention. The desperation of the idle youth population has boiled over. Since Friday, we have experienced serial cases of daylight armed robbery in more than ten (10) areas in Lagos State concurrently. Ogun State too has its own fair share of the unrest. Meanwhile, the people have resorted to self-help. They have formed themselves into vigilante groups brandishing all sorts of weapons to protect their lives and property.

What is more? Sir! You have again failed us in the primary responsibility of the government which we have entrusted you with. That is, the security and welfare of the people of Nigeria. I think this should have been the time when the civil security architecture is not overburdened. Then, we couldn’t have been able to help the situation we found ourselves today more importantly when the Secretary to the Government of the Federation never knew Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure is in such bad state, the Health Minister see no reason to pay or insure medical officers and the Police are hard-working in their extortionate practices. Sir, this is an upshot of your paltry budgetary allocation of less than 8% to health Sector, education and youth development from 2016 till date. Mr. President, these boys are no longer begging. They are demanding menacingly with weapon.

Sir, I can see the fear in your face. You are terrified by this situation. You cannot look us in the eyes and tell us the sad truth. Maybe that is why your tards took to Twitter to admonish Nigerians on Saturday 11th of April, 2020, to continue to endure the unfriendly sufferings courtesy of your approaches, dispositions and attitude to issues of national importance. General Buhari, you need to man-up. Those Tweets cannot be taken for an exercise of your powers under the Quarantine Act. As it is, we are in a state of quandary as to the extension of the lockdown that ended yesterday.

Yes! You have brought this suffering on us. COVID-19 was already in more than Sixty (60) countries before 27th of February, 2020 when we recorded the first case of an Italian Citizen who returned to Nigeria on 25th of February, 2020. Yet, you did not order restrictions of flight till 25th of March, 2020, when your daughter and others of top government functionaries and politicians arrived the country infected with the virus. Before now, all reported cases of COVID-19 were imported. You could have intensified contact tracing and indexing of all returnees within the last 30 days using the airlines manifests. You should have invited them and treated any case of disobedience as an enemy of the State.

Sir, I understand that we are dealing with a pandemic that have changed human history in less than Hundred (100) days and that the lockdown has to be maintained to contain the spread of corona virus but, the people are hungry. Your people need food. If you do not consider them now, the next ten (10) days will not be funny. There is anger in the land, the tension is palpable, tempers have risen across board, any extension or prolongation of the lockdown without a watertight mechanism or provisions to cushion the effects, would most likely spell doom at the long run. Let us avoid socio-economic Armageddon!
