“He signed it because he trusted him.”

Three months later, trouble knocked.

Emeka had borrowed money from his friend, Musa. Musa gave him a simple-looking document and said:

“Just here. It’s only an agreement between friends.”

Emeka smiled, signed, and went home.

But there was one thing he did not do.

He did not read the document.

Months later, Musa demanded not only the money Emeka borrowed, but also an additional amount stated in the document.

Emeka was shocked.

“But you told me it was just a simple agreement!”

Musa replied quietly: “You signed it.”

And that was when Emeka learned a painful lesson:

A signature is not decoration. It can become evidence against you.

The law does not always ask, “Did you trust the person who gave you the document?”

Sometimes the question is: “What exactly did you sign?”

📌 Before you sign any agreement, read it. Understand it. Ask questions. If necessary, let a lawyer explain its meaning and consequences to you.

Because when ink meets paper, trust may fade, but the document remains.

Don’t let a beautiful friendship become an ugly courtroom story.

“I only signed the paper, how did I become the one they are looking for?” 😳

Emeka got a job.

The company asked him to provide a guarantor.

His uncle signed.

“Uncle, don’t worry,” Emeka laughed. “It’s just formality.”

Three months later…

Emeka disappeared with company property.

Guess who received the company’s demand letter?

Uncle. 😭

He ran to the office shouting: “Me? I only signed as guarantor!”

But here is the legal lesson:

A guarantor is not merely putting a signature on paper. Depending on the terms of the guarantee, the guarantor may undertake legal obligations if the person guaranteed defaults.

As they say, “when you carry another man’s load, you may also feel its weight.”

So before you sign as a guarantor, read the document. Understand the obligation. Ask questions. And where necessary, seek legal advice.

Because that innocent-looking signature may have a longer story than you expected. ⚖️

Don’t sign first and understand later.

“But I have the receipt!”

That statement has put many property buyers in trouble.

A receipt may show that money was paid. It does not, by itself, establish that the person who collected the money had good title to the property.

Before paying for land or property, investigate the title and properly document the transaction.

The money you save on legal due diligence today may save you from a much bigger loss tomorrow.

He thought the money he paid was enough. Then one question changed the entire story: ‘Where is your evidence?’

BEFORE YOU AGREE TO “STAND FOR SOMEONE” KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SIGNING!

Someone comes to you and says: "Please, just sign for me. If anything happens, I’ll handle it.”

You sign, later, the person defaults.

Then you hear: “You are liable.” 😳

You stood as a guarantor. A guarantor generally promises the creditor: "If this person fails to pay or perform his obligation, I will answer for it.”

The principal debtor remains primarily responsible. The guarantor's liability generally arises upon the debtor's default, subject to the terms of the guarantee.

Never sign as a guarantor merely because someone says, “It’s just a signature.”

That signature may carry a very serious legal obligation. Know what you are signing before you sign it.
