This matter landed on my desk early this morning
in fact, it was what got me out of bed.

A client 22 experienced some medical complications and visited a hospital, where she underwent tests and other diagnostic procedures. After receiving her results and prescribed medications, she took them to a pharmacist.

During their interaction, and after repeated pressure to open up to him, she finally confided that she had previously had an abortion. She pleaded with him not to disclose this information to her parents, especially as he was familiar with her family. He agreed to keep it confidential.

As treatment progressed, the pharmacist began expressing personal interest in her. He told her he liked her and wanted her to be his girlfriend, adding that he does not usually behave that way towards patients but could not help himself because he was “in love.”

She became curious and asked whether he was married. He responded that he was not legally married but had a woman who had given birth to about two children for him (I cannot recall the exact number she told me).
It was on that basis, she declined his proposal.

Subsequently, the pharmacist allegedly retaliated by disclosing to her parents the confidential information she had shared with him, seemingly because she rejected his advances and refused to enter into a relationship with him.

Law no send “anger” or “vex”
Due process must be followed.

Bad tenant experiences don’t fall from heaven they usually come from weak and careless tenancy agreements.

If you want peace of mind, steady rent, and less “Barrister please help me” stories, this is what to do

As a landlord, stop managing tenants with vibes take it serious as business but no bone face like my landlord oooo

Use a fixed-term tenancy agreement.
Here’s why it saves you stress

1. The tenancy has a clear start and end date, e no dey mercy for tenants.

2. Tenant must pack out when it expires or declare his intent to retain the apartment to you. (I know you like that )

3. No renewal? No staying back.

If the tenant overstays, congratulations to you
They have become a tenant at will, not a king

Here is the sweetest part of it ,

They are NOT entitled to 6 months’ quit notice.
Once the rent expires, tell your lawyer to issue
7 days’ Owner’s Intention to Recover Possession.

You can even add this small but powerful clause to make it more spicy

Tenants must inform you one month before expiration if they want to renew

Renewal must be on or before expiration (must be at your discretion)

When your rent expires and you do not renew, you become a tenant at will.

A tenant at will stays in the property at the mercy of the landlord and is not entitled to a 6-month quit notice.

What you are entitled to is a 7-day Notice of Owner’s Intention to Recover Possession (after which the landlord takes you to court because he can't force you out of the house).

Quit notice applies only where there is a valid and subsisting tenancy and the tenant is not in serious rent default.

In essence,
Do not owe rent unnecessarily.
If you foresee any reason for delayed payment or non-renewal, communicate with your landlord before the tenancy expires. It can save you from sudden eviction issues.

The law allows you to register your intellectual property, giving you legal ownership and protection.

Barrister, how can I prevent my business money in my personal account from being taxed as personal income?

What you should do:

1. Register your business with CAC as a company, not a business name.

2. Register with the relevant tax authorities and validate your TIN.

3. With the registration documents, head to the bank and open a corporate bank account.

What are the benefits? Operating as a company comes with several advantages, including:

1. Exemption from certain taxes, such as Companies Income Tax, until you exceed the small company threshold.

2. Taxes are not deducted immediately upon receiving money. Instead, tax is assessed at year-end based on your declared profit.

Note:
Tax is paid on profit, not on the total money received, unlike personal accounts where money may be treated as personal income.
