FROM ORO TO OLÓÒLÙ: BARBARIC PRACTICES AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS MUST END IN OYO STATE

No Individual or Group Is Above the Constitution

OYO, NIGERIA | 5 August 2026

The Ansarul Huda Islamic Organization (AHIO) expresses profound concern over what appears to be a disturbing pattern of violations of the fundamental rights of innocent citizens in Oyo State under the guise of cultural and spiritual practices.

Barely days after the conclusion of the 2026 Oro Festival, during which women and girls in several communities were compelled to remain indoors under threats of traditional sanctions, another disturbing incident has emerged from Oremeji, Ibadan. The allegations made by Mrs Wasilat—including unlawful detention, coercion, degrading treatment, public humiliation and extortion—have once again brought to the forefront the urgent need to protect the constitutional rights of every citizen.

For decades, disturbing reports have surfaced from different parts of Oyo State alleging that innocent citizens have been subjected to intimidation, unlawful confinement, degrading treatment, and other abuses under the guise of traditional or spiritual practices. While Ansarul Huda recognizes and respects the constitutional right of every community to preserve its lawful cultural heritage, no tradition, belief, or custom can supersede the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or justify violations of fundamental human rights.

It is both tragic and unacceptable that in the twenty-first century, citizens are still allegedly subjected to unlawful detention, forced rituals, public humiliation, coercion, intimidation, and degrading treatment. Human civilization has advanced beyond the era where fear, superstition, or extra-legal authority can be used to deprive citizens of their liberty and dignity. Such barbaric practices, wherever they occur and whoever perpetrates them, must come to an end.

The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees every Nigerian the right to dignity of the human person, personal liberty, freedom of movement, freedom of conscience, and equal protection under the law. These rights are inalienable and cannot be suspended by festivals, traditional beliefs, spiritual claims, or the actions of private individuals.

No individual, self-acclaimed spiritual leader, traditional institution, shrine, or private group has the legal authority to arrest, detain, interrogate, punish, intimidate, or compel any Nigerian to make confessions or undergo rituals outside the due process of law. Such powers belong exclusively to constitutionally recognized law enforcement agencies acting within the limits of the law.

The allegations emerging from Oremeji are too serious to be ignored. They call for an immediate, independent, transparent, and impartial investigation. If anyone is found to have participated in unlawful detention, coercion, degrading treatment, extortion, or any other criminal conduct, such persons must be brought to justice irrespective of their status, influence, or social standing.

Ansarul Huda therefore calls on the Oyo State Government, the Inspector-General of Police, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and the Attorney-General of Oyo State to immediately investigate these allegations and ensure that justice is served. We also call on the authorities to provide adequate protection for Mrs Wasilat, her family, and all witnesses from intimidation or retaliation.

The Organization equally urges the Oyo State Government to take proactive measures to ensure that no woman or any other citizen is again compelled to remain indoors, unlawfully detained, publicly humiliated, or deprived of his or her constitutional rights under the guise of culture, tradition, or spirituality.

The events surrounding the Oro Festival and the disturbing allegations arising from Oremeji should serve as a wake-up call to the Government and all law enforcement agencies. A government committed to justice cannot remain indifferent when citizens allege that their constitutional rights have been trampled upon. Failure to act decisively risks normalizing impunity and encouraging future violations.

Ansarul Huda believes that Oyo State can preserve its rich cultural heritage without sacrificing the dignity, liberty, and constitutional rights of its citizens. Respect for culture must never become a licence for oppression. Tradition must never become an excuse for injustice. Spirituality must never become a tool for intimidation. The Constitution remains the supreme law of the land.

We therefore call on the Oyo State Government to demonstrate, through concrete action, that the rule of law prevails over fear, coercion, and impunity. The era in which innocent citizens could allegedly be intimidated, humiliated, confined, or compelled to submit to unlawful practices without consequences must come to a definitive end.

The twenty-first century has no place for barbaric practices that degrade human dignity and violate fundamental rights. Oyo State must choose justice over impunity, law over lawlessness, and human dignity over oppression.

ALJHuRiC Commends the Federal Government and Security Agencies on the Safe Rescue of Oriire Abduction Victims

The Ansarul Hudah Justice and Human Rights Centre (ALJHuRiC) expresses its sincere appreciation to the Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for its commendable efforts in securing the safe release of the victims of the Oriire abduction in Oyo State.

ALJHuRiC also acknowledges the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of the various security agencies, the Oyo State Government, and all other stakeholders who worked tirelessly to ensure the safe rescue and return of the abducted victims without harm. Your collective efforts are highly commendable.

The leadership of ALJHuRiC firmly believes that sustained collaboration among the Federal Government, State Governments, security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, community stakeholders, and citizens remains the most effective strategy for guaranteeing lasting peace, safety, and security across Nigeria.

We further recommend stronger cooperation between the Federal Government and the various State Governments in addressing security challenges, promoting economic growth, fostering peaceful coexistence, and strengthening the administration of justice. Such synergy will contribute significantly to sustainable national development and the protection of lives and property.

On this joyous occasion, ALJHuRiC congratulates the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, security agencies, and all well-meaning Nigerians, especially the families of the rescued pupils and teachers of Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State, on the successful return of their loved ones.

May this achievement strengthen our collective resolve to build a safer, more secure, and more peaceful Nigeria.

ANSARUL HUDAH JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS CENTRE (ALJHuRiC) CALLS ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION OVER THE ORIIRE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ABDUCTION

The Ansarul Hudah Justice and Human Rights Centre (ALJHuRiC) expresses deep concern over the recent abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State and calls on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take urgent and decisive action to secure the immediate release of the victims.

The areas surrounding the Old Oyo National Park present unique security challenges due to their vast forest reserves and difficult terrain. The Old Oyo National Park covers approximately 2,512 square kilometres, stretching across northern Oyo State into parts of southern Kwara State. The park and its surrounding corridors are characterized by:

i. Extensive forest areas around the Old Oyo National Park corridor;

ii. Remote bush paths and settlements around Oriire and neighbouring communities; and

iii. Forest routes connecting parts of Oyo and Kwara States.

Under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the President of Nigeria is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and has overall authority over the nation's security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), among others.

ALJHuRiC therefore calls on the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discharge its constitutional responsibility of safeguarding the territorial integrity of Nigeria and ensuring the security of all citizens.

Accordingly, we urge Mr. President, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to direct all relevant federal security agencies to intensify coordinated operations within and around the affected areas and facilitate the immediate rescue and release of the victims abducted...see details in the comments....

ALJHuRiC Calls for Immediate Sanctions Over Hijab Discrimination at Esther Oshikoya CBT Centre

Osun, Nigeria | Thursday, 16th April 2026

The Ansarul Hudah Justice and Human Rights Centre (ALJHuRiC), Nigeria has expressed grave concern and strong condemnation over the discrimination, harassment, and humiliation of Muslim female candidates at the Esther Oshikoya CBT Centre during the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Reports reaching the Centre reveal that several candidates — most notably *Miss Fatimah Salaudeen* — were reportedly compelled to remove their hijab before being allowed entry into the examination hall. This action contravenes both the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom and the official guidelines of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which clearly permit candidates to sit for examinations in modest religious attire, including the hijab, subject only to routine and non-discriminatory security checks.

ALJHuRiC describes the incident as a disturbing case of religious discrimination and an unjustifiable violation of the dignity of young candidates at a critical stage in their academic pursuit. In a democratic and plural society governed by the rule of law, no Nigerian student should face exclusion, intimidation, or humiliation on account of her religious identity while attempting to sit for a national examination.

The Centre acknowledges the prompt intervention of officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, alongside security personnel and other stakeholders, whose efforts helped restore order and enabled the affected candidates to proceed with their examinations. However, ALJHuRiC maintains that the damage caused by the initial violation cannot simply be overlooked.
