VOCATIONS SUNDAY
THE CALL TO RELIGIOUS LIFE
Vocations Sunday invites the Church to reflect on God’s call and the human response to it. In Christian theology, vocation expresses the belief that each person is called by God to a definite state of life for the fulfillment of His divine purpose. Among these, the priesthood and consecrated religious life stand out as paths of total self-giving in service to God and humanity. They are not merely roles, but deep participation in the mission of Christ and His Church.
The priestly vocation is rooted in Christ, the Eternal High Priest. Through Holy Orders, the priest is configured to Christ and acts in persona Christi capitis, carrying out a threefold mission: teaching, sanctifying, and governing. This demands not only intellectual formation but also spiritual depth, pastoral sensitivity, and sacrificial love.
Similarly, the consecrated religious life is marked by the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. These are means toward a deeper union with God and a radical imitation of Christ. Religious men and women thus become prophetic and eschatological signs, witnessing to the primacy of God and the reality of the coming Kingdom.
