Almost all these 8 children are first class king in Yorùbá land till present. Though some have gone into extinction with their town, perhaps during the war that ravaged Yorùbá land for hundreds of years.

Can you identify the kings that are children of Ọ̀rúnmìlà living presently?

Olokun, a Yoruba god/goddess. This image was dug up in the late 19th century in the Olokun Grove, Ile-Ife, Osun state and used in annual rites to honour Olokun.

An Ife priest, Chief Faloba Fagbenro, described Olokun as the goddess of the sea and patron of bead making, which makes glass bead work an important industry in Ile-Ife.

He recalled that the head of Olokun (Ori Olokun) remained in the hands of the family responsible for the Olokun cult until Ooni of ile-ife brought it to the palace for safekeeping in 1934.

The terra-cotta head of Olokun has been replicated in strategic places of the world, including Latin America and Europe. The image always brings back to memory the civilisation in the areas of art and technology that took place in Nigeria and Africa before the British invasion.

Even though Olokun is believed to be a female and also a male, at the same time, among different worshippers and tribes around the world, most of the features of typical Olokun Heads are very similar, except for the fact that some of the faces are feminine, smiling and without the holes which represent the pores for beard growth or shaven male beard.

Scarifications: Facial scarification or facial marks are common on all Olokun heads. This symbolises the Yoruba traditional body and facial ornament like tribal marks. The Scarifications on Olokun heads are usually straight and diagonal marks from the tip of the head, down from both cheeks, nose and down to the chin. They are beautifully crafted and ornamented.

Crown: A typical Olokun crown has a crown-like covering on the head. Although, there is no historical backing, to support any information about Olokun being a king, but some of the historical accounts suggest Olokun as being a queen (as a female) and a king (male) of the ocean.

Tiny Holes: Some Olokun heads have tiny holes along both cheeks, upper parts of the lips, neck and the jaws areas, to represent beards in men.

Holes under the eyes: It is has been noticed that some Olokun heads have wide holes under the two eyes, though this is not a common feature of a typical Olokun head, but must be observed and noted. Researchers believe, this may have been as a result of making Olokun Heads in form masks to cover the face, in some cultures and worship in some parts of the world. There is no proof yet, if Olokun masks are worn during Olokun worships or festivals.

Olokun is still a reverred and respected deity in Yoruba land and some other parts and festivals are still celebrated by Olokun worshippers till date, in Ile-Ife and many parts of the world.

The Origin Of The Yoruba Adage "Sebotimo Elewa Sapon"

Once upon a time, there was a woman who sold cooked beans in Abeokuta. Her bean joint at the time connected the roads that led to Ijaiye, Ago-Oba, Itoku, Lafenwa, Isale Igbein and Ake roads. The location of her restaurant was tagged “Sapon,”

which was derived from the word “Saponloore,” meaning “help the bachelors.”

People, especially bachelors, derive pleasure from eating at a restaurant because they perceive it as a place to wine and dine in those days. In addition, important personalities like kings, government officials, civil servants, and even students, used to buy beans and stew (ewa pakure) from her.

Madam Janet Ewusi Odesola was born in 1925. Young Janet attended the Methodist elementary school in Ijoko, Abeokuta. She began her food selling business by selling dry fish before she felt the need to own a restaurant that sold cooked beans in 1951.

So, because of the calibre of people that patronized her, her cooked beans sold very fast every day, despite the large quantity of beans she cooked.

Although, history has it that she cooked a big bag of beans daily, and there wouldn’t be any leftovers.

However, it came to a point where people started owing her. Some would buy her beans and pay, while some would buy on credit. Also, there were some people whose money would not be enough and who would promise to pay later, which they never did. She started drowning in debt as the credit accumulated. So, she began to think of a solution and then came up with a plan.

The plan was that anyone who bought from her and if their money did not suffice, she would advise with the phrase “sebiotimo” (that is, cut your coat according to your cloth). For instance, if they came to her to buy beans, she would ask for money, and if it was 10 kobo, she would sell 10 kobo worth of beans. If such a person then asked to put more (that is more than 10 kobo) that he would pay later, she would respond with “sebiotimo.”

In the 14th century, the Oyo Palace Compound was established, and Oranyan, the first oba (king) of Oyo, was succeeded by Oba Ajaka, the Alaafin of Oyo. However, Ajaka was deposed due to his lack of Yoruba military virtue and his tolerance for too much independence among his sub-chiefs. Leadership was then transferred to Ajaka’s brother, Sango, who would later be deified as the deity of thunder and lightning. After Sango’s death, Ajaka was restored to the throne, and he returned as a more warlike and oppressive ruler. His successor, Kori, managed to conquer the rest of what historians would later refer to as metropolitan Oyo.

The heart of metropolitan Oyo was its capital, Oyo-Ile (also known as Katunga or Old Oyo or Oyo-oro). The city featured two essential structures: the ‘afin,’ which was the palace of the Oba, and the Oba’s market, known as ‘Oja-oba.’ The palace was situated at the center of the city, close to the Oba’s market, Oja-oba. The city was surrounded by a tall earthen wall with 17 gates, emphasizing the importance of the king in Oyo.

At one point, Oyo experienced a period of decline due to the Nupe occupation. Oyo had become a formidable inland power by the end of the 14th century, expanding at the expense of its neighboring states. However, during the reign of Onigbogi, Oyo suffered military defeats at the hands of the Nupe, led by Tsoede. Around 1535, the Nupe occupied Oyo, forcing its ruling dynasty to seek refuge in the kingdom of Borge. The Nupe’s occupation of the capital led to Oyo’s decline as a regional power until the early 17th century.

The Oyo Empire employed both local and tributary forces to expand its territory. The structure of the Oyo military underwent several changes to accommodate its growing empire. It included the Eso, a semi-standing army of specialist cavalry soldiers, consisting of 70 junior war chiefs appointed for their military skills. The Eso were led by the Aare-Ona-Kakanfo, who served as the supreme military commander. During Oyo’s imperial period, the Aare-Ona-Kakanfo personally led the army in the field during campaigns.

Within metropolitan Oyo, the Bashorun, a leading member of the Oyo Mesi, commanded forces. Metropolitan Oyo was divided into six provinces, each divided evenly by a river, and provincial forces were grouped into two armies, under the Onikoyi and the Okere for the east and west sides of the river, respectively. Lesser war chiefs were known as Balogun.

Tributary leaders and provincial governors were responsible for collecting tribute and contributing troops to the imperial army during emergencies. These forces were occasionally used in Oyo’s distant campaigns along the coast or against other states.

Commerce played a vital role in Oyo’s prosperity. It became the southern emporium of the Trans-Saharan trade, exchanging goods such as salt, leather, horses, kola nuts, ivory, cloth, and slaves. The Yoruba people of metropolitan Oyo were highly skilled in craft making and ironwork. In addition to trade taxes, Oyo derived wealth from taxes imposed on its tributaries. For instance, taxes on the kingdom of Dahomey alone brought in an estimated annual amount of 638 thousand dollars.

PREGNANT FOR A MADMAN
EPISODE 4️⃣
(Written By Teachable Stories)
“ When Eric heard that Ada was pregnant for the ma'd man, he became as ma'd as a bear with a sour head and took Ada's clothes and picture to a deadly shrine to k'll Ada with the pregnancy.

“Young man, what brought you to my shine? The Native Doctor asked.
“Great one, This girl ru!n my life and ran away, so I want you to k!ll her. Eric said.

“Young man, drop the picture and the clothes inside here and call her name 3 times. The Native Doctor instructed.

“Ada!! Ada!! Ada!!. Eric called.

“Stoorrpp... Young man, are you aware this girl is pregnant? The Native Doctor asked.

“Yes, I am fully aware great one that's what brought me here. Eric replied.

“Do you truly know the man who is responsible for the pregnancy?
“Yes, He's a po'or miserable ma'd man. Eric responded.
“The Native Doctor stared at him, shook his head, and laughed.

“Young man, I can not k'll this girl because that child she carries in her womb is untouchable, and there is no power in the existence that can ha'rm that child. The Native Doctor said.

“Great one, I don't understand what you're talking about and besides I didn't ask you to k'll the child in her womb but the girl.

“Young man, there are mysteries behind the ma'd man and his family that you don't know. so that unborn child is not just an ordinary child and there is no amount of charm I will do that would k'll this girl because of the child she carries.

“So great one, what should I do at this point? Because I want to deal with this girl. Eric asked.

“Young man, Let me reveal deep mysteries to you, This girl you intended to k'll was not destined to be your wife. The fact that you both were in love with each other doesn't guarantee that you both would end up together as husband and wife.
So no matter what you do, she can never be your wife because she was assigned to marry that ma'd man and there is no amount of money or gold and silver that you would give her that would convinced her to marry you. That girl is willing to sacrifice anything for the ma'd man and she has vowed to leave no stone unturned until she marries the ma'd man because of the dreams and visions she had concerning the ma'd man.

“This is getting out of hand, so wise one what should I do now I am baffled right now Eric asked.

“Young man, let the girl and the màd man be because if you continue to attack them, you might lose your life or ru!n your glorious future, young man, you are destined to be a king in a great kingdom.

“King? How? Eric asked.

“Yes, a king, I see a crown on your head.

“But, I am not from a royal family, so how is it possible that I will be a king? Eric asked.

“I agree with you that you're not from a royal family but a royal family would come out from you and the only and easiest way you can achieve this, is by quickly giving up on this girl and the ma'd man and make peace with them hastily because they are a road map to your glorious future and your greatness. The Native Doctor said.

“Eyes of the gods, I am very confused, I don't understand at all, please can you explain to me in the way I will understand, because I don't see how a po'or ma'd man can be a road map to my destiny.

“You would understand when the time comes, and you would recall everything I told you today. But if after everything I revealed to you today, you continue to still fashion an attack on this girl and the ma'd man you would regret everything I told you today either in prison or in a grave. You may leave. Native Doctor said.

“Eric left the shrine confusingly and when he got to his town he disclosed everything to his friends they all laughed at him.

“Guy, I hope you don't believe the falsehood that the Native Doctor told you. Felix said.

“Felix, I believe the man sha but I am confused. Eric replied.

“Eric, you're just too funny abeg, how can you believe such a thing? The majority of all these Native Doctors are fake and I believe you met one of them. Rex said.

“So what do you guys want me to do now? Eric asked.

“Guy, eliminate that girl, she can't b-trayed you and cause you se'vere pa'ins and heartbreak then go Scott-free. So you've to k'll her with that pregnancy. Rex said.

“Rex, I can't do that anymore because of what the Native Doctor said. Eric replied.

“Eric, forget about what the Native Doctor told you. he is original fa'ke, he doesn't see or know anything. As far as I am concerned he is just using that shrine for a business. Felix said.

“Felix, you are very correct. Eric, how can someone tell you that you will be a king and you believe? Rex asked.

“Guy is that one that baffles me till now o, because there is nothing like king in my hometown, omg I don't believe that man. I think I will try another Spiritualist. Eric said.

“But why can't you send some boys to k'll Ada instead of all this stress? Rex asked.

“Rex, that was my first plan but the only problem I have is that I don't know where Ada and the ma'd man are staying, where they are staying is unknown to everybody. Eric said.

“Eric, get ready, first thing 2moro, I will take you to go and meet one of the mightiest goddesses in my grandmother's village. Felix said.

“Felix, I have heard a whole lot about that goddess, and I heard she's very powerful. Rex said.

“Yes, she's extremely powerful, she had lived in a river for over a thousand years.

“Felix, if you knew the goddess was that powerful, why didn't you take me to see her instead of that fake Native Doctor? Eric asked.

“Guy, It was because of the distance, so are you ready to go to the place tomorrow? Felix asked.

“I am fully ready. Eric responded.

“The next morning, They traveled to the village to see the mysterious goddess, and when they got there, Eric disclosed everything Ada did to him to the goddess and he eventually told the goddess to k'll Ada with the pregnancy, Thereafter, he dropped Ada's clothes, Pics and sacrificial items that Felix instructed him to buy.

“Your request can not easily be granted, because this soul is pregnant, and that blo'od she carries is protected by very strong mysterious ancestral powers. But there is a way out. Goddess said.

“Queen mother, what's the way out? I am willing to do anything. Eric asked.

“Sacrifice must be made to de'stroy that mysterious ancestral powers before the girl can be k'lled. The goddess replied.

“Queen Mother, what and what am I going to bring for the sacrifice? Eric asked.

“So the goddess told him what he would bring.

“3 days later, Eric went to the river with the sacrificial items, and after the goddess performed the sacrifices. She said.
“Goo!! Your sacrifice has been accepted and your request has been granted, and that Ancestral powers has been des'troyed, The girl would die tonight.

“Thereafter, she disappeared, and Eric and his friends traveled back to their town.

*A few moments after they left, the goddess tried to k'll Ada countless times in her marine kingdom, but, she didn't succeed because the child in Ada's womb averted all the charms she sent to k'll Ada, and she was extremely frus'trated and a'ngry.

“At midnight, Ada and the ma'd man were sleeping deeply, The goddess appeared in the bed that Ada was sleeping and transformed herself into a very old u'gly gh'ost and she began to press and massage Ada's stomach to de'stroy the child in her womb so that she would have a chance to k'ill Ada. while the goddess was massaging and pressing Ada's stomach, suddenly Ada woke up.....

To be continued...
What do you think would happen in the next episode? even I the writer never know what will happen but I believe something weird would happen when Ada and the ma'd man wake up.
