‎GOVERNOR ALIA'S UNIVERSITY TASK FORCE: A DISTRACTION FROM THE COLLAPSE OF MOSES ORSHIO ADASU UNIVERSITY

‎Benue State Chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has received with disbelief the announcement of the inauguration of a Task Force for the take-off of the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ihugh, by Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia.
‎While Benue PDP is not opposed to the expansion of educational opportunities in our state, we find it both ironic and disturbing that a governor who has failed to address the worsening crisis in Moses Orshio Adasu University Makurdi (MOAUM), is now seeking applause for initiating another state-owned university.
‎
‎This action exposes a troubling contradiction in the educational policy of the Alia administration. At a time when MOAUM; the state's premier institution of higher learning is struggling under the weight of neglect, inadequate funding, unresolved welfare issues and recurring industrial disputes, one would have expected a responsible government to concentrate its efforts on restoring stability and confidence in the institution before embarking on another expensive venture.

‎Question to ponder upon: Why is Governor Alia rushing to establish a new university when the existing state university is battling for survival?
‎
‎The inauguration of a Task Force cannot conceal the harsh realities confronting thousands of students whose academic progress has been disrupted by strikes and uncertainty. It cannot erase the frustration of lecturers and university workers who have repeatedly raised concerns over welfare and institutional funding. Neither can it substitute for the urgent intervention required to rescue the University from the challenges that has continued to undermine its effectiveness.

‎It is becoming increasingly evident that this administration is more interested in commissioning projects and making grand announcements than in sustaining and strengthening the institutions already entrusted to its care. Governance is not about multiplying structures while existing ones crumble.
‎Governance is about continuity, responsible stewardship and measurable outcomes.

‎The people of Benue State deserve more than political spectacles. They deserve a government that addresses pressing realities rather than creating distractions from them.
‎
‎The PDP is particularly concerned that the administration appears determined to pursue projects that satisfy political ambitions while ignoring the immediate needs of critical State institutions. No serious government establishes a new university as a monument of progress while the State's flagship university remains trapped in avoidable crisis.

‎If Governor Alia genuinely believes education is the foundation of development, he should begin by demonstrating commitment to the institution that has for decades served as the intellectual backbone of Benue State.

‎MOAUM, has produced generations of distinguished professionals, academics, jurists, public servants and political leaders who has contributed immensely to the growth of our state and nation. To watch such an institution struggle while government celebrate the establishment of another University is not only unfortunate but a clear indication of misplaced priorities.

‎The PDP therefore calls on Governor Alia to immediately redirect his attention towards resolving the challenges confronting the State University, restoring academic stability, improving funding and guaranteeing an environment conducive for learning and research.

RICE REVOLUTION IN BENUE NEEDS AONDOAKAA'S HAND

The late Umaru Musa Yar'Adua administration is adjudged by many as the best administration since the return of democracy in Nigeria. Though very brief and cut short by the death of the President, that administration had rolled out a seven point agenda, and on the basis of its implementation, it is reckoned as the best thing that happened to Nigeria after military rule. The seven point agenda covered Food Security, Education, Security, Wealth Creation and Youth Empowerment, Power and Energy, Land Reforms, and Transport. In the kitchen cabinet that drove this agenda was Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa SAN, then Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice.

Today, Aondoakaa is positioned and waiting to be sworn in on May 29 as the next Governor of Benue State. But as the Tiv adage rightly captures, a hunter waiting for a prey must already be set with his weapon. Aondoakaa is waiting with the seven point agenda template, the same template Nigerians have longed to see revived since the demise of Yar'Adua.

One of the key focus areas of Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa SAN on his agenda for Benue from 2027 is agriculture. Coming from an industrialist who owns a ranking rice company in Africa, this agenda is something very close to his heart. It is not the usual vote-catching promise of a politician who has never seen the inside of a processing facility. It is the instinct of a man who has watched grain move from soil to shelf and understands exactly where the value leaks.

The 2024 Agricultural Productivity Survey placed Benue third in national rice production with approximately 559,000 metric tonnes. Niger State led with roughly 707,000 metric tonnes, and Kogi State followed with about 567,000 metric tonnes. Those numbers are real, but they are nowhere near the ceiling of what Benue can produce. They represent what Benue has managed to do under neglect, insecurity, and the absence of any coherent state investment in the rice value chain. They are not a reflection of Benue's actual capacity. They are a reflection of Benue's frustration.

Consider just one local government area. In Guma alone, there are over 150,000 hectares of uncultivated swamp and fadama land sitting idle. Governor Samuel Ortom personally cleared about 40,000 of those hectares for individual rice farmers to cultivate, and he himself put roughly 18,000 hectares under cultivation. Yet the bulk of that land remains untouched. Kwande is another substantial rice cultivation belt, and there are others spread across the state. What all of this tells you is that Benue is not third in rice production because it lacks land. It is third because it lacks political will married to agricultural intelligence.

The Taraku Mills model is instructive here and deserves a fresh look in 2027. That factory had a dedicated site for soybean cultivation. When the harvest came in, it fed directly into the mill. The loop was closed on purpose. A government that deliberately replicates that logic for rice, where state investment in cultivation feeds directly into processing infrastructure, would push Benue to the top of the national chart without straining to do so. The land is there. The water is there. What has been missing is a governor who treats agriculture as an industry rather than a photo opportunity.

Aondoakaa's approach would begin where every serious agricultural intervention in the Middle Belt must begin: security. Farmers do not abandon their land because they lack seeds or financing. They abandon it because armed herders have turned their farmlands into a graveyard. No irrigation canal, no mechanised ploughing scheme, and no government subsidy can compete with a bullet. Security is the foundation. Without it, every agricultural masterplan printed on glossy paper is a fiction. An Aondoakaa administration that takes rice seriously must first make the land safe enough for farmers to return to it, stay on it through the full season, and harvest without running for their lives.

Beyond security, the Aondoakaa agricultural agenda would need to industrialise the chain rather than simply expand raw output. It means rice processing mills positioned strategically in high-yield local government areas, so that Benue is not selling paddy to buyers in Kano who mill it, brand it, and sell it back to Benue at three times the farm gate price. It means cold storage and warehouse infrastructure, because a state that cannot store its harvest loses its negotiating power the moment the rains stop. It means certified seed multiplication programmes, because the difference in yield per hectare between improved varieties and what most Benue farmers currently plant is not marginal. It is dramatic.

Precision farming techniques that are now standard in comparable agro-climatic zones across East and Southern Africa can be adapted to Benue's fadama corridor. Soil testing at scale, GPS-guided planting along the flood plains of the Benue and Katsina Ala rivers, and drone-based crop monitoring are no longer exotic. They are affordable interventions that change yield outcomes measurably. A governor who understands factory economics, as Aondoakaa does, knows that input efficiency is not a luxury. It is the margin.

Contract farming arrangements between a state-backed commodity board and smallholder farmers, with guaranteed off-take pricing, would draw thousands of displaced farmers back to land they abandoned out of market uncertainty. When a farmer knows before planting that there is a buyer at a fixed price waiting at harvest, the calculation changes. That model has worked in Kebbi State, which is not blessed with soil anywhere near as rich as Benue's. There is no honest reason why Benue should be watching Kebbi define Nigeria's rice story while sitting on fadama land that stretches farther than the eye can follow.

Benue's trajectory under an Aondoakaa administration is one where the state is not competing for third place in a rice production table. It is setting the pace. The raw materials are present. The man who understands what to do with them is positioning. The question that 2027 will answer is whether Benue is ready to emerge as the biggest rice producing state in Nigeria.

SAMUEL ORTOM: THE VISIONARY WHO SAW TOMORROW BEFORE IT ARRIVED

The announcement by the Federal Government of Nigeria that it is set to launch a new digital television platform offering Nigerians access to 100 free-to-air television channels marks another significant milestone in the country’s journey towards full digital broadcasting.

While many are celebrating this national initiative as a bold step into the future, the people of Benue State can proudly say that they have already experienced the benefits of digital television years ago, thanks to the foresight and visionary leadership of the immediate past Governor of the state, Chief Samuel Ortom.

Long before digital broadcasting became a renewed national priority, Chief Ortom recognized the transformative power of technology and modern communication. In 2020, while serving as Governor of Benue State, Ortom conceived and executed the establishment of Benue Television (BenueTV), a fully digital television station, built first as an Internet Protocol (IP) television and later expanded for comprehensive transmission on popular networks such as Startimes, DSTV, GOtv etc.

At a time when many states were struggling to sustain existing media infrastructure, Governor Ortom took the bold decision to invest in a modern broadcasting platform capable of competing in the digital age. His vision was not merely to establish another television station, but to create a platform that would inform, educate, entertain, preserve the cultural heritage of Benue people, and provide opportunities for young professionals in the media industry.

It is important to recall that before Chief Samuel Ortom initiated the Benue Television project, the state’s analogue television infrastructure had fallen into disrepair. The existing equipment beside Radio Benue in Makurdi had become obsolete, ineffective, and largely abandoned after years of neglect. Faced with the choice of merely managing a failing system or building a new one fit for the future, Governor Ortom chose the latter. He conceived and established a modern digital television station from scratch, laying the foundation for a broadcasting platform that today serves millions of viewers, promotes the state’s image, and provides employment opportunities for young professionals.

Today, Benue Television stands as one of the enduring legacies of the Ortom administration. The station has become a reliable source of information for millions of viewers within and outside the state. It has amplified the voices of ordinary people, showcased the rich cultural identity of Benue, promoted local talent, and created employment opportunities for numerous young people who might otherwise have remained unemployed.

The success of Benue Television is yet another example of Samuel Ortom’s ability to identify future opportunities and act decisively long before others recognize their significance.

Indeed, the story of Ortom’s administration is replete with examples of visionary initiatives that were initially misunderstood but later proved to be ahead of their time. His government pioneered bold policies and investments in security, agriculture, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and digital communication, many of which continue to benefit the people years after his tenure.

Perhaps nowhere was this foresight more evident than in his commitment to protecting Benue’s agrarian economy through the enactment and implementation of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law. At a time when many doubted the necessity of such legislation, Ortom stood firm in defence of the lives, livelihoods, and ancestral lands of Benue farmers. Today, the conversations around ranching and regulated livestock management across Nigeria have vindicated the position he championed years earlier.

Similarly, his administration invested heavily in healthcare infrastructure, educational development, rural roads, and institutional reforms designed to strengthen governance and improve service delivery. Many of these initiatives continue to serve as reference points in discussions about sustainable development in Benue State.

The establishment of Benue Television therefore fits perfectly into the broader narrative of a leader who consistently looked beyond immediate political gains and focused on building structures that would serve future generations.

As Nigeria prepares to unveil its nationwide digital television platform, the achievements of Benue Television remind us that true leadership is not merely about responding to present challenges. It is about anticipating future needs and taking bold action to address them before they become urgent.

Samuel Ortom demonstrated this quality repeatedly during his tenure as Governor of Benue State. His investment in digital broadcasting was not an accident. It was the product of a leader who understood that the future belongs to those who prepare for it today.

Benue as a state has never relent on her effort to better the lives of its citizens and assuage the problems that affects it common unity.

In her effort to do all these, it has registered several successes and several failures, this out comes are not just peculiar to Benue alone, but to several underdeveloped states across the nation.

This challenges have raised so many questions of which so many governors and political parties have been created as answers to this questions, yet the challenges have refuse to reduce in any way, rather it has gotten even worst in the last three years which has yielded the need to clearly confront this challenges once and for all, and the answer to this question(challenge) has being found in Former attorney general and minister of justice, Micheal Kaase Aondoakaa SAN , who through his large experience understands that the issue with Benue is just the fact that it has not been working, thus the solution to all this problem is getting Benue working again.
