NIGERIA–CANADA BILATERAL AIR SERVICES AGREEMENT:
A NEW ERA FOR DIRECT FLIGHTS BETWEEN NIGERIA AND CANADA

Canada's official treaty database also records the Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Air Transport, with the agreement signed by Canada's Mary Ng on 5 March 2025 and Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on 21 March 2025.
However, travellers should understand that signing the agreement does not mean that a regular non-stop Nigeria–Canada flight has already commenced.
As of July 2026, Canadian and Nigerian officials were still discussing and working toward direct commercial flights. Canada's Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria stated that both countries were working toward direct connectivity, including the possibility of a direct Lagos–Toronto service.

Is There Already a Direct Flight from Nigeria to Canada?

In July 2026, reports indicated that Nigeria and Canada were moving closer to direct connectivity while discussions continued.

Airlines would also need to determine whether particular routes are commercially viable, select aircraft and schedules, obtain the necessary approvals and decide which Nigerian and Canadian cities they would serve.
Canada's official explanation of air-transport agreements notes that such agreements establish the rights of airlines from both countries to operate international passenger and cargo services.
This means the bilateral agreement provides an important foundation, but the agreement itself does not automatically mean that an airline will immediately begin flying a particular route.
