IPOB Accuses UK Government Of Hypocrisy, Bias For Backing Morocco But Ignoring Biafra Agitation.
IPOB Accuses UK of Hypocrisy Over Support for Western Sahara Autonomy, Repression of Biafra
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has condemned the United Kingdom’s recent support for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal for Western Sahara, calling it a glaring display of "hypocrisy, colonial bias, and double standards."
In a statement responding to the UK-Morocco Joint Communiqué signed on June 2, 2025, in Rabat, IPOB criticized the British government for endorsing Western Sahara's autonomy plan while consistently opposing similar calls for self-determination in Biafra.
"How can the UK, which claims to uphold democracy and human rights, support autonomy for Western Sahara, yet deny the legitimate aspirations of Biafrans?" IPOB asked.
The group argued that the same principles Britain invokes—conflict resolution, regional stability, and the will of a distinct people—apply even more strongly to the Biafran situation. Instead, IPOB members face criminalization, imprisonment, and persecution for seeking peaceful separation from Nigeria.
IPOB accused the UK of deliberately sustaining a legacy of colonial suppression, recalling British support for the Nigerian government during the 1967–1970 Biafran War. It claimed that the UK supplied arms and intelligence that contributed to the starvation of over two million Biafrans, mostly children, under a blockade that was labeled merely a “civil war” by British diplomats and media.
“The defeat of Biafra was not only military—it was intellectual and economic,” IPOB said, alleging that the UK blocked efforts to reintegrate Biafra’s unique culture and scientific advancements post-war.
Decades later, the statement continued, Biafrans remain politically marginalized, economically sidelined, and subjected to surveillance and repression—a continuation of policies rooted in colonial strategy.
IPOB questioned Britain’s continued opposition to Biafran independence while promoting self-rule in other regions: “What does the UK gain from suppressing Biafra while supporting autonomy elsewhere? The answer lies in colonial tactics—divide, rule, exploit.”
Highlighting Biafra’s intellectual and economic potential, IPOB said a sovereign Biafra could emerge as a leading African nation, threatening the dependency structures left by colonial powers.
The group urged the UK to apply international law fairly and recognize Biafra’s right to self-determination. It also called on the United Nations and African Union to investigate Britain’s role in repressing Biafra’s movement while supporting similar causes elsewhere.
Finally, IPOB appealed to the global community to reject neocolonial oppression masked as diplomacy. "Britain’s old tactics won’t stop a people determined to be free. Just as it supports autonomy for Western Sahara, it must be ready to explain its opposition to Biafra—Africa’s intellectual soul and spiritual compass,” the statement concluded.
