Our Managing Partner Peter Ndubuisi Akpu Esq, joined the umbrella body of medical doctors in Lagos State Nigeria, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and The Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (ANPMP) took to the Streets of Lagos State yesterday on a peaceful protest to demand for an immediate stop to unjust harassment, detention in Police custody and extortion of medical doctors over alleged medical medical negligence or incidents of death in hospitals.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association Lagos State Branch Dr. Babajide Saheed as well as the President of the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners Lagos State Branch Dr. Esegine Jonathan who spoke to Channels Television and other media Correspondents lamented over what they described as an abuse of the fundamental rights of medical doctors in Lagos State which will invariably lead to occurrence of preventable deaths and practice of defensive medicine.

Medical Doctors in Lagos State live in untold fear and apprehension of being arrested, harassed and detained by the Police over complaints emanating from individuals and family members of a deceased patient on a claim that the doctors are responsible for the death of their child(ren), brothers and sisters.

The medical doctors numbering over 100 were seen carrying placard with different inscriptions" Dictors are not criminals" SAY NO TO POLICE HARASSMENT AND DETENTION" " STOP HARASSMENT OF DOCTORS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH" "DOCTORS ARE NOT CASH-COWS FOR THE POLICE" "NO TO POLICE INTIMIDATION" "IS IT A SIN TO BE A MEDICAL DOCTOR IN NIGERIA" "NO TO POLICE ABDUCTION AND EXTORTION ETC

The Peaceful rally was organized to draw the attention of the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police Lagos State, the Federal and State Government and the Judiciary to what poses a serious threat to the practice of the Medical Profession in Lagos State.

In the words of Peter Ndubuisi Akpu Esq, a lawyer and managing partner of Greenage Attorney LP, a law firm based in Lagos who stood in solidarity with Medical Doctors during the peaceful protest said" The Police doesn't have the jurisdiction to convict a doctor for the capital offence of murder right in their Police Station without proper investigation and adjudication by a court of competent jurisdiction. The law has established the Medical and Dental Council of Nigerian (MDCN) as the disciplinary body for erring doctors who are to collaborate with Police to Investigate and prosecute cases of medical negligence and deaths and not the jurisdiction of Lagos State SCID Panti or other Station Police"

In the event of an alleged death of a Patient in hospitals medical doctor and experts in the MDCN who understands medical procedures and intricacies and underpinnings of the cause(s) of death of a patient and alleged cases of medical negligence are in a better position to discipline erring medical doctors or hospitals and not the Nigerian Police Force.

There is no end to learning as lawyers. A good lawyer keeps learning and practicing in order to master the intricacies of the legal profession.

Even when you feel you have known it all, the principles you have mastered may be overturned by the appelllate courts or the law you mastered over time may be repealed and a new law enacted by the parliament or the rules of court or procedure may be changed.
