MULAN TARABA STATE BRANCH HOLDS FIRST CONGRESS MEETING OF 2026

The Taraba State Branch of the Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria (MULAN) today held its first monthly Congress meeting for the year 2026 at the Justice Adamu Aliyu Bar Centre, located within the premises of the Chief Magistrate Court, Jalingo.

The meeting, which was brief but impactful, was chaired by the Branch Chairman, Barrister Jamilu Mohammed Auwal, and witnessed a commendable turnout of members who engaged in fruitful deliberations on matters affecting the Association and the legal profession.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman warmly welcomed members and reminded them that the practice of law, for Muslim lawyers, is guided by amānah (trust), integrity, and justice—core values deeply rooted in Islamic teachings. He emphasized the Prophetic admonition that lawyers and judges must stand firm for justice and fairness in all dealings.

Among the key issues discussed was the proposed One-Day Seminar on Islamic Law Procedure, scheduled to hold on 14th February, 2026. The seminar will be spearheaded by a highly distinguished scholar, Professor Kamal of the University of Maiduguri, Borno State. The programme, which has been approved for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), will attract two (2) CPD points and is expected to be both enriching and impactful.

Members were encouraged to take advantage of this valuable opportunity for professional growth. Other important matters were also deliberated upon in the course of the meeting.

Did you know?

Islamic law recognizes reconciliation (ṣulḥ) as superior to prolonged litigation where justice can be achieved peacefully.

This remains a timeless principle for Muslim legal practitioners.

PRESS STATEMENT BY MULAN TARABA STATE BRANCH ON THE DONGA INCIDENT

The Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria (MULAN), Taraba State Branch, expresses deep concern over the recent violent incident at Donga, in Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State, which resulted in the loss of two Muslim lives and the closure of a mosque by Government order.

We condemn in the strongest terms the unlawful killing of any person under any circumstance. As an Association committed to justice, rule of law and peaceful coexistence, we call on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, ensure that all perpetrators are identified and brought before the law, and guarantee the protection of lives and property in the area.

While we recognise the authority of the State to maintain peace, we urge that the closure of the mosque should remain temporary, and that due legal and administrative process must be followed in determining the lawful management of the mosque in accordance with Islamic legal principles and without resort to violence or intimidation.

We call on all Muslim stakeholders in Taraba State to remain calm, avoid further escalation, and cooperate with lawful processes. We further call on the Taraba State Government to continue to follow an even-handed approach in the matter.

MULAN will, in line with its mandate, engage relevant authorities and provide necessary legal support to affected Muslims, particularly the families of those who lost their lives.
