A few months ago, a founder friend called me, sounding defeated.

“Samson,” she said, “I do not understand this generation. My best staff just resigned again.”

I listened quietly.
But deep down, I knew this was not a remote work problem.

It was a leadership clarity problem. So, I asked her one question:
“Did they leave because they could work remotely… or because your office made them feel unseen?”

Silence in the air🤐 ...
Then a reluctant laugh.
You could hear the truth land.

The Hidden Reality of this Concern:

Across many African businesses today, we still equate loyalty with presence.

“If I can see you, I can trust you.”
“If you are online all day, then you are working.”

But the best professionals today do not chase supervision.
They chase structure, fairness, and purpose.

When those are missing, geography doesn’t matter.
You may decide to pay them well, give them perks, even offer Friday pizza, a movie session benefit and they would still be planning their exit from your system, ...not your salary offer🙄 .

What Leaders Often Miss Out:

Retention is not about keeping people in our offices. it is about keeping them in our mission statements.

People don’t need constant oversight.

They need clear processes, honest feedback, and growth paths that
don’t depend on who they please.

Remote work does not kill engagement...yes!
it simply exposes where engagement never existed.

Here is what I told my friend and what I tell every business leader I consult for:
“You do not retain talent through proximity; you retain them through purpose.”

If your people can describe their daily output better than you can measure it, invariably, you have already lost them emotionally.

If your performance systems are still built around attendance logs and not outcome metrics, you are managing hours and not humans. in other words,
it is like from control to clarity!

Let’s establish a Practical Compass for Modern Leaders:

If you want to build loyalty in this new world of technology, you will need to start small...but start right

Re-define Trust — (replace monitoring with measurable outcomes ).
Rebuild Connection — (lead with empathy, not ego).
Reinforce Culture — (translate your values into digital behaviour).
Reimagine Growth — (give people clear ladders, not ceilings).
Recognize Consistency — (praise reliability as much as brilliance).

Finally, let’s Reflect while the cotton is drawn…

Remote work does not steal your top performers.
You might have simply made it easier for them to see how little they were
valued.

Because people don’t really quit jobs.
They quit environments that refuse to evolve.

As we prepare for a new season of work next year 2026,
the question every leaders must ask is simple:

“Am I building a system people want to stay in…
or one they cannot wait to escape from?”

A few weeks ago, I left a comment on a post that deeply inspired me.

It was written by a phenomenal business leader in Africa…one whose story perfectly reflected the grit, humility, and growth mindset I admire so much.

The post spoke about beginnings… about how small steps and early sacrifices can lead to extraordinary results. It struck a chord because I had lived through something similar or maybe still in (as life is a lesson).

So, I shared my own connecting story of how my path once crossed their brand indirectly, how I had followed their journey, and how their leadership mirrored values I believe in.
It was not a pitch.
It was connection.
Or so I thought.

Until a senior professional I respect reached out privately with a gentle critique.

She said:
“Samson, your comment sounded like you were trying to take over the author’s shine while envisaging visibility.”

That hit me (I must admit).
Not because she was wrong, but because she was right in perception.

Here’s the core truth:

Sometimes what we intend as engagement may be perceived as interference, especially on platforms like LinkedIn and other professional spaces where tone and timing carry their own language.

But here’s the second truth:

Visibility with humility is not arrogance.
it is simply professional courage.

We live in a world where opportunities are no longer found behind office doors but in digital corridors.

And if you are not seen, you are not considered.
If you are not expressive, you are not remembered.

What I Learned from That Experience:

That single exchange taught me something far beyond social media etiquette.

It reminded me of the thin line between self-promotion and shared inspiration.

It reaffirmed that you can:

Respect another person’s light while reflecting yours.
Share your truth without stealing a stage (be mindful).
Engage leaders not to compete but to connect through value (absolutely).

Because sometimes, what looks like an overstep is just someone brave enough to step forward.

The Bigger Lesson for Professionals:

If you ever find yourself unsure whether to comment, share, or engage just remember this:

Networking is not about attention. It is about alignment.
You can admire someone’s story and still contribute your voice and not to overshadow but to extend the conversation (reasonably).

Because when professionals exchange perspectives, growth multiplies.
I believe authentic engagement is one of today’s most undervalued career skills.

Done with respect, clarity, and intent, it is not noise… rather it is a bridge.

My Closing Thought:

When you see someone’s light, do not dim yours out of fear of being misunderstood.

Just make sure it shines with respect, relevance, and readiness to learn. And to the kind mentor who advised me…, thank you.

You reminded me that how we show up is just as important as why we show up.
Both lessons matter.

Your people are not resisting accountability
They are resisting confusion disguised as culture once worked with an organization that claimed to have a toxic culture.

But what they truly had was a crisis of clarity.

No one was sure who decided what... as feedback felt personal because processes were invisible. And accountability was mistaken for attack.

The problem was not bad people; it was the absence of defined systems.

When expectations change with emotion, even the most loyal employee eventually disengages.

Here is how clarity restores culture;

1. Define roles before recruiting for them😀.

Every job must have measurable outcomes that connect to the business goal👍.

People thrive when they understand their purpose.

2. Communicate decisions transparently👌.

Explain how and why choices are made. Transparency turns silence into trust.

3. Create feedback systems not sentiments🤪.

Data removes ego from dialogue. When feedback is structured, it builds confidence and not conflict.

4. Align recognition with behaviour not relationships🙂.

Reward actions that sustain the system not favouritism that breaks it.

5. Document culture as a standard🤏.

Policies do not kill humanity. They protect fairness.
Culture fails where clarity ends.

True leadership is not about protecting feelings but about protecting fairness. Because fairness is what gives culture its strength and its soul
