Why Is Lagos Littered With Dirt?

Aside from delayed waste collection,
a major part of the crisis stems from
poor civicbehavior and the sheer
size of the city.
With a population of
over 20 million people, Lagosgener-
ates more than 13,000 tonnes of
waste every day. Existing dumpsites
are underimmense pressure, maki-
ng timely waste evacuation even
more difficult.
Many residents also avoid paying for
approved waste collection services
and insteadpatronize illegal, banned
cart pushers. These operators often
dump refuse on roadmedians, street
corners, drains, and public spaces
under the cover of darkness.
Why LAWMA and PSP Operators

Struggle

The Lagos State Government relies
on Private Sector Participation (PSP)
operators tocollect household was-
te. However, the system faces major
challenges:
- Rising operational costs
- Many residents fail to pay waste
collection bills.
- Broken-down evacuation trucks
poor road access, heavy rainfall, and
overstretcheddumpsites delay waste disposal.

The Implications
Plastic waste clogs drainage chan-
nels, causing severe flooding.
Rotting refuse attracts rodents andinsects, increasing the spread of diseases like choleraand malaria.
Persistent pollution hurts Lagosimage, discourages tourism, and
increases healthcarecosts.

What the Law Says

The Lagos State Environmental Sani-
tation Law adopts a zero-tolerancepolicy forenvironmental offences. Illegal dumping and littering: Offen-
ders risk a ₦250,000 fne, up to three
months’imprisonment, or communi-
ty service.
- Ban on cart pushers: Illegal operat-
ors and those who patronize them
are liable to arrest,while their carts
may be seized.
Mandatory waste bins: Some localcouncils require every household to have an approvedwaste bin. Failure
to comply may attract a ₦50,000 fneor up to six months’ imprisonment.

Why do drivers increase transport fare every time it's rains?? Is it because of traffic, demand or challenges of driving in the rain? Or are commuters simply being taken advantage of?

The Beauty and the Pains of Rain to Lagos Residents

Rain is an amazing blessing from God. It brings life's sustaining nourishment, and healthy refreshing atmosphere that relieves us from the scorching heat and several diseases, especially in over crowded mega city like Lagos.The fresh scent after the rain, the greener environment, and the cooler breeze create moments that many Lagosians cherish.

However, rain in Lagos is like a two edged sword, it comes with both relieves painful realities Heavy rainfall in Lagos often leads to severe flooding due to inadequate drainage systems, blocked waterways, and rapid urbanization. Roads become impassable, homes and businesses are submerged, and daily activities come to a standstill. Many commuters spend hours trapped in traffic, while others are forced to wade through floodwaters, risking their health and safety.

More worrisome, is the advantage that some of the commercial vehicles take to extort money from Lagosian. For example, yesterday, because of the rain, a trip from Agege to ikeja cost #300 to #400, was suddenly increased to #1,000 just because of the rain. As a result,many Lagosians were forced to trek long distance from home to work, and even some still had to trek back from work to their homes, simply because they could not afford such an unexpected and unreasonable increase. This is an unpleasant recurring experience, every rainy day in Lagos. Is this also happening in other states of Nigeria? Or are Lagos commercial drivers just greedy and oppotunistic, individuals who use every opportunity to add to the general hardship of the people? Lagos residents deserve to be protected from such illegal greed induced hikes in transportation cost, solely because it rains.

All appropriate consumer protection agencies and the government should do the needful. An appropriate Law, with stuff punishments, may be an appropriate intervention to protect the masses of Lagos residents from this unjustified hikes.
