*"Banana Republic": an era of lawlessness*

By Gidigba Group

Once upon a time, we had a State where the rule of law and legality guided our operations, in this State, government did business having in mind the sanctity and rights of humanity, whatever you needed to do as a citizen of this State, the rule of law and due process was observed or was seen to be observed.

At every fora, this State held up its head, shoulders raised, ego high yet modest, so much so that communities around this State took a tour of how the State was run, perhaps to borrow administrative template.

In education, the reforms were revolutionary, innovative technology occupied the front page of the national dailies, civil, public service reforms was a mainstay, revenue generation went exponentially high, as agberoism, thuggery took the back seat, the State could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with robust economies to discuss cross-cultural development, even almighty Lagos once admired the State's policy on education, going beyond that to borrow her style.

In this State, fiscal prudence saved a whole lot of money to build infrastructure and service capital expenditure, complimentary local government administration was already picking up across councils, creating a veritable ground for competitive development.

For the State's workers, developing their capacity and prompt payment of salaries took centrestage, leading to a regular train the trainers' programmes for improved public service delivery.

This State witnessed measurable economic boom, remarkable education and healthcare, commendable environmental sustainability, improved safety and security and gained global accolade.

Nowadays, however, a thick shadow of darkness, brigandage and lawlessness hovers around the very foundations of a once-revered State, where thuggery and agberoism are at the epicentre of decision making, there is a dearth of definite policy direction, causing physical development and revolutionary governance to go on sabbatical.

In this State, we have seen a brazen disregard for the rule of law, moreover, there has been a deliberate interference in the affairs of local government, as against Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy, with impunity, there has been a violent, lawless and illegal takeover of councils, where one, sometimes, two Councilors are said to have illegally impeach constitutionally elected Council Chairmen.

Quickly, the State has derailed, losing her national advantage and global prominence; yet, the governor of the State looks away as though all is well, after all, he is said to have been selected, not elected.

60+ days on, not one policy statement has been developed to run on, nearly 100 days, nothing remarkable, order than deliberate attacks on regulatory laws and due process, causing local and national media to be awashed with extremely ugly incidents viz: illegal takeover of Councils, protests over draconian and dehumanizing revenue collection method, stampede at the tribunal, suspension of elected Council Chairmen as against Supreme Court ruling, sack of career civil servants, unpaid salaries of essential workers, lots, and lots more.

It is however, strongly believed that this once enviable State will someday pick-up, regaining her pride of place in the comity of enviable States, marking a radical deviation from the notorious and infamous entity it is now—a banana republic, where lawlessness and hooliganism reigns supreme.
