Quite long but worth reading....

*On Jim Ovia And Sir Shina Peters*
I've been hearing and reading a lot about this and most people tend to be stylishly blaming Sir Shina Peters for buying a house for 20million and this is making it look like buying a house is a complete investment mistake or liability.

Lemme start by sharing my comment on a friend's facebook timelines as regards this subject...
If Sir Shina Peters had invested the money in real estate rather than just buying a house for a purpose best known to him 20years ago, the returns would have been overwhelming by now. The first thing to know is that spending the money on a house wasn't the mistake he made but the misconception, the belief or miscalculation that the house was going to be an asset.(plenty people are still making this mistake till date).

Everything boils down to FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE (FI) which is best learnt through financial education. Its unfortunate that its not taught in our schools and not too pronounced in our society so you have the responsibility to deliberately school yourself on this.

Your house looks like an Asset but it's not an Asset. You could have grown up to be made to believe this or people can easily talk you to believe this.

It takes financial intelligence to know that your house is not an asset and to know how to turn your house to an asset. It takes FI to know that asset is anything that puts money in your pocket while liability is what takes money out of your pocket. It takes FI to know that saving isn't optional, its a MUST regardless of what hits your account every month. It takes FI to be an investor. Being rich doesn't make you an investor, if you've been thinking that having plenty money will automatically make you an investor, then you need to think again. You need to learn and understand the rules of the game before you can be an investor by yourself. We would always pay for our ignorance and what we don't know, we don't know, there's no middle ground. I'd not blame Sir Shina peters, he made his choice based on what he could see and what he knew and understood about money while Ovia made his too based on the same premises. So many people are still making the same mistakes today and time will soon tell.
If spending money on real estate or in buying a house was a wrong financial decision, how come people like Robert Kiyosaki started his real estate business in 1974 by buying a small condominum of two bedroom for 6000 dollars and the small dragging business has become the talk of town in America with amazing worth of trillions in dollars. Barbara Corcoran also started her real estate business 23years ago with 1000 dollars given to her by her boyfriend(this money would have been used by most ladies today on paparazzi, show off and vanity and they would have been left still depending on the same guy or other guys...a talk for another day) and the business is worth over 2billion US dollars today. This is not peculiar to them abroad, we have our own Richard Nyang CEO Lekki Garden who started his real estate business with almost $5000 and we all know the story today and many other Nigerians that started from nothing but only had foresight. So the difference remains the knowledge, vision and education each of them had while taking their decisions. This has nothing to do with their line of investments. The biggest difference is that one SPENT his money while the other INVESTED it and this was influenced by the knowledge or foresight of one and the short sightedness and perspectives of the other. Sir Shina can still make fortune out of this public mess if he consults the right people. I believe the house has not outrightly become a monument of pity bcos real estate remains one of the best investment with daily increasing value anyone can consider but always seek counsel. Why I always encourage people to invest right and leverage on timely real estate information by acting on it. Remember that ten years from now, you children will be enjoying or suffering from the decision you make today. Imagine the number of people eating from the decision Jim Ovia made 20years ago.
