LGBTQ AND WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT.
BY JOHN ARCHIBONG
Contextually, LGBTQ is an acronym for "le***an, gay, bis*xual, transgender and q***r.
As a result of globalization, curiosity and advancement in human knowledge, some individuals claim not to be heteros*xual, others intentionally refused to identify with the s*x they were assigned at birth and the rest. These practices has manifested overtime and has been given solace in some legal system.
The question as to the extent of universal acceptability of LGBTQ cannot be over flogged. It is pertinent to state that while some countries (Switzerland, USA, South Africa) legalizes LGBTQ, others criminalizes it (Nigeria 👉 Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill, signed into law on January 7, 2014, by former President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria).
At the international level, the united nations lends its support to LGBTQ thus legalizing same and giving it global recognition. On the contrary, member states aren't compelled to domesticate same against their wish.
On a lighter note, international treaties and convention seems to have persuasive effects on State parties.
LGBTQ are criminal offenses under the Nigeria laws, with severe penalties ranging from imprisonment to death. Eg. In 2022, the sharia court ruling that sentenced three men to death by stoning for being gay has left LGBTQ+ groups in fear.
LGBTQ falsely seems to have been recognized and legalized in Nigeria but quite absurd, as the Nigeria legal system has no place for it.
Recently, the activities of a certain Bobrisky appears to have contravened the provisions of the Nigeria anti-LGBT laws.
Relevant authorities must crack down on these individuals, to restore sanity in the country and to deter others from practicing same.
