A Judge is a Lawyer, but a Lawyer is not a Judge
Many people often use the words lawyer and judge as if they mean the same thing.
But in law, they are not the same.
Let’s break it down in simple terms.
A judge is first a lawyer. Before anyone can become a judge, the person must have studied law, been called to the Bar, practiced as a lawyer for some years, and have a strong reputation for integrity and competence before they can even be considered for appointment.
In other words, every judge started as a lawyer.
However, not every lawyer becomes a judge.
A lawyer is someone who represents clients, gives legal advice, prepares legal documents and appears in court to argue cases.
A judge, on the other hand, is the person who sits in court to hear both sides of a case, interprets the law and gives the final decision.
Simply put:
🥢 A lawyer argues the case.
🥢 A judge decides the case.
Think of it this way
In a football match, the players play the game, but the referee does not play the referee ensures the rules are followed and decides when a foul has been committed.
That is similar to the relationship between a lawyer and a judge.
So while every judge is a lawyer, only a few lawyers are eventually appointed to become judges of the court.
So while every judge is a lawyer, only a few lawyers are eventually appointed to become judges.
That is why the statement remains true
A Judge is a Lawyer, but a Lawyer is not a Judge.
Understanding this difference helps people appreciate the different roles lawyers and judges play in the justice system.
