Jeonju North Jeolla Kotesol The North Jeolla KOTESOL group was created to build a professional layer on to the already outstanding social community which exists, here in Jeonju.

The Jeonju North Jeolla KOTESOL group was created to build a professional layer on to the already outstanding social community which exists, here in Jeonju. The branch brings in teachers (Korean and native English speakers) from the major city and neighbouring towns, providing a forum in which teachers can exchange and debate ideas, from a professional point of view. The existence of this network aims to raise the standard of teaching in Jeollabuk-do, as well as offering a venue for teachers (both new faces and old) to meet and socialise.

IDEAS for Critical Reflective Practice
We often reflect on what happens in our classrooms—but how can we make that reflection more critical, meaningful, and socially aware?
In this interactive workshop, Jocelyn Wright introduces the new IDEAS framework, developed by two longtime KOTESOL Reflective Practice and Social Justice Special Interest Group facilitators.
Participants will use the framework to reflect on critical classroom incidents connected to inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and sustainability.
Working with fellow educators as compassionate “critical friends,” participants will discuss actions already taken, consider possible responses, and explore reflective practice from a social justice perspective.
The goal? To leave not only with new insights, but also with meaningful questions for continued self-exploration.

Teaching Phonics to Native Korean Speakers

Why do some English sounds remain difficult for Korean learners even after years of study?

In this practical workshop, Benjamin Daniel Crookston will explore some of the phonetic differences between Korean and English that can create persistent challenges for young learners.

Participants will look at common difficulties with English consonant and vowel sounds that are not present in Korean, including challenges such as pronouncing the short i sound.

The workshop will also focus on the importance of continuing phonics instruction as students progress beyond kindergarten and begin tackling more advanced reading.

Most importantly, teachers will leave with practical ideas they can bring into their classrooms, including movement activities, songs, drawings, and games designed for kindergarten and elementary-aged learners.

Teach the Students in Front of You – with Action Research!

What do the students sitting in front of us actually want and need from their classrooms?

In this workshop, Rob Dickey challenges educators to move beyond assumptions and comparisons and instead investigate their own teaching environments and learners through Exploratory Action Research.

Teachers don't necessarily need extensive research skills, large budgets, libraries, or dedicated research time to begin investigating what happens in their classrooms. Students can even become co-researchers, creating opportunities to better understand learning while supporting classroom motivation.

Participants will explore practical approaches to teacher research, ways of involving students in the process, and even the possibility of eventually sharing or publishing their classroom research.

Presentation Development in Language Teaching

PowerPoint is everywhere in language classrooms—but are we using its visual and audio possibilities effectively?

In this workshop, Ben Sullivan will explore how language teachers can use sound and salient motion in PowerPoint to draw learners' attention to features of English that can be difficult to acquire through listening, reading, and interaction alone.

Participants will see technical suggestions for using moving PPT shapes to emphasize grammar and consider research-informed criteria for selecting images for vocabulary instruction.

The session will also look at how teachers can prompt generative AI to support the creation of memorable visual materials and PPT games.

Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their own experiences with more and less successful presentations before considering the limitations of PowerPoint and how these teaching principles may apply even when technology isn't available.

Picture Books for Fun and Accessible Supplemental Learning

Can picture books help bring more authentic and accessible English into provincial classrooms?

In this workshop, Nicole Cyr will explore how picture books can be used to supplement English language teaching in Korea, particularly in provincial contexts where students may have fewer opportunities to encounter English outside the classroom.

Participants will consider how picture books can be incorporated into extensive reading programs or regular classes, while Nicole shares lessons learned from her own experience using them in rural elementary and middle schools.

This won't just be a session about books! Participants will have the opportunity to create a lesson plan around a picture book of their choosing and exchange ideas and best practices with fellow educators.

While everyone is welcome, the workshop may be especially relevant to educators working in K–12 contexts.

Teaching to a Shrinking Room: Demographic Decline in Universities

Korea's demographic decline isn't just a future concern—it is already changing universities, departments, curricula, and classrooms.

Drawing on 13 years of experience inside a Jeonbuk university English department, Aaron Snowberger, PhD, will examine how demographic change is reshaping higher education in Korea.

The session considers enrollment cuts, curriculum consolidation, university mergers, changing class sizes, and the growing recruitment of international students as regional universities respond to declining domestic student populations.

Aaron will also share his firsthand experience of an English department where full-time staff decreased from almost 35 to 5 and English language requirements were reduced by half.

Rather than simply warning about what may happen, this session offers educators a map for understanding the changes already underway and what may be coming next.
