Kenya National Commision on Human Rights Our Mandate is to act as a watch dog over the government in the are of human rights and provide leadership in moving the country towards a human rights state.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is an autonomous National Human Rights Institution first established by a Kenyan Act of Parliament in 2002. KNCHR became operational in July 2003. Following the promulgation of the new Constitution of Kenya on August 27, 2010, and the passing of the KNCHR Act 2011, the Commission was transformed into a constitutional body. Our Vision

KNCHR congratulates its very own Commissioner Prof. Marion Mutugi, EBS on her installation as the Chancellor of Outspan Global University.

The prestigious appointment as the ceremonial titular head of the university is not only a recognition of her distinguished academic scholarship and leadership, but also an honour to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).

The Commission celebrates this significant milestone and commends Prof. Mutugi on this well-deserved recognition of her contribution to academia, scholarship and leadership.

As part of the ongoing efforts by the Haki na Ushirikiano Project supported by Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya to equip refugees and host communities on integration and rights awareness, KNCHR , Refugee Consortium of Kenya RCK , DRS and other partners held a legal aid clinic for refugees and host communities in Kapsoya, Eldoret.
Refugees in the country face a myriad of challenges including lack of awareness on rights, challenges with access to justice and redress, access to psychosocial support etc. Through the session, refugees and hosts acquired knowledge on laws and policies on refugee management, pathways to seek recourse when violations occur, improved awareness on rights and responsibilities, all these geared towards building a conducive asylum and human rights environment for refugee and host communities.

Success in ending FGM requires integrity, trust between law enforcers and communities, collaborative efforts; police, health workers, children's officers, ODPP working together, across borders and with communities.

As part of this collaboration, KNCHR conducted a training for Law enforcement officers in Garissa focusing on Prevention and Response to Female Ge***al Mutilation. The session provided insights on the use of Survivor centred approaches in identification of risk indicators, application of The Prohibition of FGM Act (2011) and other Constitutional Provisions, mastery in evidence collection and chain of custody, application of trauma informed care and referral pathways.

KNCHR with the support of UNFPA UNFPA in Kenya conducted a capacity-building training for Law Enforcement Officers and National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) in Tharaka Nithi County aimed at strengthening the prevention and response to Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM).
The Commission presented findings of a survey conducted last year highlighting the existing challenges in FGM prevention and response. Additionally, participants were taken through the proposed Training Module for Law Enforcement Officers and National Government Administration Officers, which provided a platform to enhance their understanding of their role in preventing FGM and strengthening response mechanisms. The participants highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships, coordination, and information sharing among stakeholders as critical in preventing FGM, protecting survivors, and safeguarding the rights and dignity of women and girls.

On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, KNCHR joins the global community in raising awareness of a growing and dangerous form of human trafficking under this year's theme: "Trapped Behind the Scam."

Human trafficking is evolving. Across the world, criminal networks are trafficking women, men and young people into online scam compounds where they are forced to commit cyber-enabled financial crimes, including romance scams, investment fraud and other online scams. Victims are subjected to intimidation, violence, threats, debt bo***ge, constant surveillance and impossible work quotas, leaving them trapped in exploitative conditions with little chance of escape.

Trafficking in persons is a grave violation of human rights. Every person has the right to freedom, dignity and protection from exploitation.

As we mark this day, KNCHR calls for strengthened efforts to prevent trafficking, protect survivors, prosecute perpetrators and enhance cross-border cooperation to dismantle criminal networks exploiting vulnerable people.

KNCHR, with support from UNFPA UNFPA in Kenya , conducted a capacity-building training for law enforcement officers in West Pokot to strengthen the prevention of and response to Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM).
The session presented findings from a previous survey that identified key gaps in FGM prevention and response, providing participants with evidence to improve their interventions and enhance a survivor-centred approach to handling FGM cases.
Participants emphasised that stakeholder collaboration is a critical pillar in eliminating harmful cultural practices. They noted that coordinated efforts among law enforcement agencies, communities, health service providers, the Commission, and other stakeholders are essential to preventing FGM, protecting survivors, and safeguarding the rights of women and girls.
The participants also urged KNCHR to continue strengthening the capacity of law enforcement officers and other key stakeholders across the county through regular training and collaboration

KNCHR, in collaboration with UNFPA UNFPA in Kenya , conducted a training for law enforcement officers in Elgeyo Marakwet County to strengthen the prevention of and response to Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM).

Participants were taken through the proposed Training Module for Law Enforcement Officers and discussed practical strategies to prevent FGM, particularly during the school holiday period when girls are at heightened risk. The training reinforced the importance of coordinated, survivor-centred interventions to protect girls and uphold their rights.

Strengthening the capacity of law enforcement officers is key to ending Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) in Kenya.

Through KNCHR 's collaboration with UNFPA UNFPA in Kenya , the Commission continues to enhance the prevention of and response to FGM by equipping law enforcement officers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively address the harmful practice.

The training featured findings from a previous survey that identified existing gaps in the prevention of and response to FGM, providing participants with valuable evidence to inform their work. Officers also participated in interactive group sessions, analyzing case scenarios and applying the proposed Training Module for Law Enforcement Officers to identify appropriate prevention, protection, investigation and response measures.

By strengthening the capacity of duty bearers and promoting a coordinated, survivor-centred approach, KNCHR and UNFPA remain committed to advancing the protection of women and girls from FGM and upholding their human rights.
