For LGBTQ+ people, a post can become a threat. A private image can become a tool for outing. Hate speech can become incitement. Disinformation can fuel real-world violence, discrimination and exclusion.
Through the project, CMRSL joined other local human rights organisations in bringing the lived realities of LGBTQ+ communities into Kenya’s digital rights and online safety conversations.
Through our engagement with KICTANet, the Communication Authority of Kenya and other human rights actors, we highlighted the digital threats affecting LGBTQ+ communities including outing, privacy violations, online harassment, hate speech, disinformation and technology-facilitated violence ; and brought these experiences into wider conversations on digital rights, content moderation and online safety.
For CMRSL, the impact went beyond participation. helped move LGBTQ+ digital safety from the margins into mainstream digital rights conversations, reinforcing the importance of online spaces where safety, dignity and inclusion are not privileges.
