Legal empowerment gives people the knowledge, tools, and confidence to claim their rights, challenge injustice, and hold institutions accountable.

That is why legal empowerment is not just a legal issue. It is a development issue.

From SDG 1 (No Poverty) to SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), progress depends on people being able to use the law to improve their lives.

No one should be too poor, too remote, or too marginalized to access justice.

Today, we join communities around the world in reaffirming our shared responsibility to protect the environment for present and future generations.

For many communities across Turkana and the wider Ateker region, the environment is more than a natural resource. It is a source of livelihood, culture, identity, and resilience. Yet climate change, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and unsustainable exploitation continue to threaten these foundations.

The renewed court battle over NG-CDF and county bursary funds raises urgent constitutional questions on devolution, separation of powers, accountability, and conflict of interest in public finance management.

As courts continue to interrogate the role of legislators in fund implementation, Kenya must remain committed to protecting the spirit of devolution envisioned under the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.

Public resources must be managed through lawful, transparent, and accountable structures that strengthen service delivery while respecting constitutional mandates of each level of government.

The Data Protection in the Civic Space training continued today in Lodwar with an engaging session facilitated by Mr. Victor Ndede, Head of Programmes at Amnesty International Kenya.

The session focused on the right to privacy and the importance of responsible handling of personal data, including the principle of collecting only data that is necessary for a legitimate purpose.

Participants also examined key decisions and legal cases handled by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), providing practical insight into emerging data protection issues and enforcement in Kenya.

Discussions further explored the constitutional protections under Chapter 4 of the Constitution of Kenya on the Bill of Rights, including rights that cannot be limited or derogated from, and their connection to privacy, dignity, and human rights within the civic space.

The training continues to provide CSOs with practical knowledge and legal understanding necessary for ethical and lawful handling of personal data in their day-to-day work.
