Transforming Waste into Value: The Kamakowa Jamtaka Pilot Centre

We are pleased to share progress on the Kamakowa Jamtaka Organic Waste Management Demonstration Pilot Centre, a strategic initiative designed to advance localized circular economy solutions.

By bridging organic waste processing, sustainable agriculture, and socio-economic integration, this pilot project demonstrates a closed loop system model:
Bio-Conversion Efficiency: Utilizing Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production to efficiently decompose and process organic waste.

Sustainable Agri-Feeds: Integrating a dedicated chicken rearing unit where nutrient-dense BSF larvae serve as a primary feed source, lowering input costs and reliance on traditional feeds.

Inclusive Value Chains: Actively integrating waste pickers into the localized value chain, creating safer, dignified, and economically viable livelihoods.

This initiative is proudly funded by Centre for Environmental Justice And Development - CEJAD, whose partnership and support remain instrumental in advancing sustainable organic waste management and community empowerment.

Over the weekend, we were happy to host a delegation from Mathare, Nairobi, for a day as part of their 3-day exchange visit to Kisumu, thanks to Muungano wa Wanavijiji

We spent the day showing them our different projects, including:
Glass cutting and soap making
Our hatchery
Plastic recycling

It was a great time to share ideas on how to make these activities a sustainable way to earn a living. We also discussed best practices that they can take back and use within their own groups in Mathare. Helping each other grow is how we build stronger communities

Kamakowa Jam Taka CBO , through Kisumu Waste Pickers Welfare Association (KIWAPWA) and in partnership with Kisumu County Government, had a successful benchmarking visit to Griinscom Farm in Nakuru.
The visit focused on learning and exchanging ideas on advancing zero-waste practices and organic waste management as part of our pilot project funded by Centre for Environmental Justice And Development - CEJAD

We were inspired by the innovative approaches and practical solutions demonstrated at the farm. We also looked into how we can embark on market waste management and the commercialization of products from organic waste, such as frass fertilizer from Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production, to ensure long-term sustainability.
