UP TO WHAT AGE CAN PARENTS SUBMIT VISA APPLICATIONS FOR THEIR CHILDREN? WHEN CAN CHILDREN SUBMIT APPLICATIONS THEMSELVES?

According to the regulations of the Immigration Services Agency of Japan (Nyukan), the age of 16 is the cutoff determining whether parents can apply for a visa on behalf of their child!

Under 16 years old: Parents (or legal representatives) can submit the application and pick up the Residence Card 100% on the child's behalf. The child DOES NOT need to be present at Nyukan.

From 16 years old and above: The child CAN GO ALONE to Nyukan to submit their application. Parents can still act as representatives to submit the file, but the child MUST be present. This is the mandatory age at which the child must appear in person (except for special health conditions).

Important Condition: Even though children under 16 are exempt from appearing in person, they MUST physically be in Japan throughout the visa extension/change of status process.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
When parents apply on behalf of a child under 16, please bring documents proving the relationship (Birth Certificate / Family Register), along with the child's original Passport and Residence Card.

Normally, applying for Permanent Residency requires 10 consecutive years of residence in Japan (including at least 5 years on a working visa or family/status-based visa). However, the Teijuusha visa has a special exception allowing a much shorter timeframe.
