A man who left a property in 2002 and did not contribute to mortgage payments for nearly two decades has lost his legal battle to reclaim interest in the St Andrew house, which the Supreme Court says fully belongs to his former spouse. According to Justice Tara Carr, though the two jointly bought the house, the woman "has dispossessed" him of his interest in the property through the adverse possession provision of the law.

Since its formation in 1938, the People’s National Party has been at the forefront of advocating and providing land for the landless. After the abolition of slavery, the newly freed slaves in Jamaica were compelled to seize Crown properties and marginal lands outside of the plantations as no compensation was given with their freedom as was done with the plantation owners.

Anxiety is mounting among residents now living in the informal settlement on the outskirts of Clifton in Portmore, St Catherine, following news of a planned demolition of their houses. The residents, some of whom have been living on the land which forms part of the Bernard Lodge property for more than 15 years, told The Gleaner that they will be homeless after the demolition is carried out because they have nowhere to go.
