πποΈ Help Protect Migrating Birds by Turning Off Your Lights! ποΈπ
Hi everyone! As we head into migration season, itβs vital to address a hidden danger for our feathered friends: light pollution. Birds flying at night can become disoriented by bright lights, leading to exhaustion and dangerous collisions with buildings. Sadly, an estimated 365 to 988 million birds die from such collisions every year, including many species that are already at risk.
Hereβs how you can help:
π Turn off non-essential lights from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
π Avoid using landscape lighting that could disturb birds resting in trees or gardens.
π Close your blinds at night to cut down on light escaping from windows.
For essential lighting (like security lights), use these tips:
πΉ Aim lights down to minimize sky glow.
πΉ Install shields to direct light where itβs needed.
πΉ Use motion detectors so lights are only on when necessary.
By participating in these simple actions, youβll be part of a growing Lights Out movement that's making a huge difference across North America. For more info and to see how you can further protect birds, check out https://birdcast.info/science-to-action/lights-out/ for more info.
