Il gruppo Mutoid Waste Company, arrivò a Santarcangelo a
l'inizio degli anni ’90 per partecipare ad un’edizione
del festival dei Teatri, da allora, Santarcangelo è
divenuta la loro casa. La loro arte, il loro stile di vita, loro stessi, sono
divenuti per i santarcangiolesi famigliari e dopo 20 anni le
collaborazioni col Comune e con le scuole del territorio si
sono moltiplicate, allo stesso modo
i legami tra le persone,
vent’anni vuole dire che c’è oramai una seconda
generazione di bambini che sono a tutti gli effetti
santarcangiolesi. Il campo è un luogo unico, allo stesso modo fuori e dentro
le regole, che ci consente di vedere altri orizzonti, di
scoprire nuove cose ed è bellissimo che un luogo così
possa essere considerato una parte di una piccola città
quale è Santarcangelo e che i santarcnagiolesi lo vivano
di fatto come una parte della città. In questi molti anni di pacifica e proficua convivenza si
è inserita purtroppo una voce singola che è contraria
alla loro permanenza, una voce che rischia oggi di mandare a
monte e di distruggere questo patrimonio. Abbiamo detto che il campo è un “caso unico” e come
tale va trattato, perciò ogni formula burocratica che
cerchi di individuarne i confini sta stretta, non è un
campeggio (eppure le persone vivono dentro caravan o
costruzioni temporanee che somigliano piu ad opere d’arte
che a case ), non è un campo Rom ( eppure le persone che
vi risiedono non sono sempre le stesse e magari non stanno
tutto l’anno) non è certo un quartierino di case a
schiera, insomma, il Comune di Santarcangelo in questi anni
si è mosso nelle sedi opportune e a cercato di risolvere
il problema per trovare una soluzione teoricamente non
facile e che coinvolge diversi enti, per tenere a
Santarcangelo il Campo Mutoid come un Luogo dell’Arte. Oggi, per colpa delle denunce (ripetiamo di una sola persona
che in 20 anni si è opposta ad ogni soluzione ) ci
troviamo di fronte ad una istanza di sgombero che potrebbe
spazzare via non solo l’arte ma delle persone che
fisicamente vivono, lavorano, vanno a scuola a Santarcangelo
e questo è molto triste. Sappiamo che l’Italia è un paese dove si trova un
cavillo per tutto, soprattutto per le cose più
irragionevoli, e sul Campo Mutoid, un luogo così speciale,
non è difficile trovarne, chiediamo perciò un atto di
soliderietà per dimostrare con questa firma che
Santarcangelo è un’altra cosa:
The Mutoid Waste Company arrived in Santarcangelo in 1990 to perform
in that year's "Festival Dei Teatri". Their
art, their way of life, they themselves, became an accepted part of
life in Santarcangelo. During these last 23 years they have
increasingly collaborated on projects with local institutions, such as
the schools, and their ties with the local community have strengthened. In recent years some of the Mutoids have chosen the yard as a safe
place to raise their own children who are, to all intents and
purposes, "santarcangeolesi". The Yard is unique; a place that follows the rules whilst living
completely outside them, a place that advocates an alternative outlook
on life, a place that allows people to discover new things - and it's
wonderful that such a place can be considered a true part of
Santarcangelo and that the locals readily accept the Yard to be a part
of their community. Despite these many years of mutually respectful cohabitation there is
one voice that has been continually against the Mutoid's presense; a
single objector who now seriously threatens this culturally important
phenomenon. We've already mentioned that the Yard is a completely unique place,
and should be treated as such. If the authorities intend to deal with
the situation using the usual legal confines it could only be
considered a very short sighted attitude. Mutonia is not a campsite (even though it's inhabitants live in
caravans, buses, trucks and temporary constructions that look more
like works of art than houses), it's not a standard traveller's site
(although many of it's inhabitants have a semi-nomadic lifestyle) and
the group have never illegally occupied the land. In recent years Santarcangelo's local council have been searching for
a solution to the situation, seeking help from other government
bodies, with the ultimate aim of declaring the Mutoid Yard as a Site
of Cultural Interest. Unfortunately the Yard currently finds itself under a very real and
serious threat of eviction - a reality which would not only destroy
this unique community but also disperse it's inhabitants and their
artwork. A reality which would be a very sad outcome for both
Santarcangelo and the Mutoids who live there. We know that Italy is a country where every problem can be resolved,
even the most illogical. So let's try to find an answer for the Mutoid Yard, that would not be
