Chinese scientists have achieved a groundbreaking innovation by developing glowing plants through the incorporation of genes from fireflies and luminous fungi. This achievement, created by Magicpen Bio, has been applied to more than 20 plant species, including orchids, sunflowers, and chrysanthemums, producing a real-life effect reminiscent of the glowing bioluminescence seen in the film Avatar. According to founder Li Renhan, these glowing plants have the potential to revolutionize urban lighting and tourism. Demonstrated at the Zhongguancun Forum, the plants require no electricity to shine; they only need water and nutrients, making them an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative for lighting public spaces. This innovation not only offers a unique aesthetic for urban environments but also helps reduce energy consumption, contributing to a more sustainable future. As these glowing plants gain traction, they could become a key part of efforts to improve energy efficiency in cities around the world.
