A controversy recently arose involving Andhra Pradesh High Court Judge Justice Tarlada Rajasekhar Rao after a viral courtroom video showed the Judge strongly reprimanding a young advocate and directing that he be taken into police custody for 24 hours allegedly for “indolent behaviour” and failure to produce a copy of an order during proceedings. The incident drew widespread criticism from the legal fraternity, particularly because the advocate was reportedly a junior lawyer with only about two years of practice and was seen apologising before the Court.
The Bar Council of India (BCI), through its Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, subsequently wrote to the Chief Justice of India seeking urgent intervention. The BCI described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and stated that such actions could create fear among young advocates and adversely affect the dignity of the legal profession. The Council reportedly sought withdrawal of judicial work from the Judge and called for appropriate administrative action.
