In the backdrop of the unfortunate incident that happened in Tuticorin yesterday, would like to share a recent incident that the CALL was involved in:
On 17.02.2020, a washerman/ironman in sector 100, Noida was killed by a speeding vehicle in the early hours of that day while he was cycling on his way to work. Subsequently, the washermen (Dhobis) of the three adjoining sectors sat on a protest demanding the arrest of the erring driver and the protest lasted just for a day.
Suddenly in June, one erring cop started contacting the washermen working in the vicinity of sector 100 and started calling them to the police station and demanding Rs. 2000 each and in return assuring them of not filing any case against these poor washermen for the sit in protest that happened on 17.02.20. This was irrespective of whether a particular washerman/dhobi took part in the protest or not.
Few washermen/dhobis reached out to the CALL reporting such harassment from that cop. After that the CALL decided to take up the issue by reporting the matter to the concerned authorities in UP and also spoke to the erring cop, who was also threatening the poor washermen of false charges.
Today morning the washermen/dhobis came to meet and informed that all the money taken from them have been returned to them and that there were no cases against them, whatsoever. The COP has gone on leave and a probable inquiry is to be initiated against him.
Each one of us can do some service to the people around us. We just need to take that one decisive step and act.
When in distress, CALL.
