As a part of the ongoing implementation of the second phase of the e-Courts project, the Government has decided to allocate unique identification numbers to all Judges in the country, to aid the Supreme Court in tracking their performance and making their judgments available on the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG).

The NJDG would consist of details such as the quality of judgments, number of adjournments allowed in different cases, time taken for delivery of judgments, case disposal rate, etc.

For the first time in the judicial history of Kerala, the High Court of Kerala has got four women sitting Judges. The historical moment was created when Justice V. Shircy was appointed on Thursday. Other three female sitting Judges her are Justice P.V. Asha, Justice Anu Sivaraman and Justice Mary Joseph. Justice PV Asha and Justice Anu were appointed from the bar, while Justice Mary Joseph and Justice Shircy were appointed from the bench.

In Last ten days Supreme Court altered the destiny of four persons accused of heinous crime of r**e and murder, as they escaped gallows to which they were condemned to Death by the High Courts and Trial Courts.

It all started with setting aside of conviction under Section 302 IPC of Govindachamy, the accused in Soumya R**e and Murder case in Kerala by the Bench headed by Justice Gogoi , which was widely discussed and even criticized. The next day, the bench headed by Justice Chelameswar commuted death penalty awarded to a child ra**st from Madhya Pradesh. Then in another Case from MP, Justice Gogoi’s Bench commuted death penalty of Kamlesh Ghanti convicted for r**e and murder of a seven year old girl. Two days later, a person accused of murdering his wife and five kids who was convicted and sentenced to death by Chattisgarh High Court, was acquitted by the Justice Gogoi’s Bench. In the present Case, the Supreme Court has commuted the death penalty imposed by the Trial Court and the High Court on Kamlesh Ghanti who was found guilty of ra**ng and murdering a seven year old girl. Three Judge Bench comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Prafulla C. Pant and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit upheld the conviction of the accused under Section 376A, 302, 201, 363 and 366A of the Indian Penal Code.

A local court today sentenced A Raghunathan, former CFO of Kingfisher Airlines Ltd, to 18 months imprisonment in connection with two cheque bounce cases filed against him and businessman Vijay Mallya by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd.

Third Special Court Magistrate M Krishna Rao also imposed Rs 20,000 fine in each case on Raghunathan after the latter appeared before the court.

Expressing “extreme shock” over a first appeal case pending in the Gujarat High Court for 35 years, the Supreme Court has directed the Chief Justice of the High Court to take necessary steps on the administrative side to ensure that such unconscionable delay and such unconscionable number of adjournments are not granted, virtually for the asking.

A subtle but fundamental distinction between “Loss of Estate” and “Loss to the Estate” was discussed in Omana P.K. and others v. Francis Edwin and others (2011 (4) KLT 952). This Judgment was challenged before the Apex Court, which has now dismissed the Appeal. The question raised in this case, was whether a certain sum which the dependants received as compensation for untimely death of Judgment debtor in a motor accident is attachable in Ex*****on Proceedings. Constitutionality of entry tax

A nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court will continue hearing a question of validity of entry tax levied by state governments on goods. Several companies, including Vedanta Aluminium Ltd, Essar Steel Ltd, Tata Steel Ltd and Adani Enterprises Ltd, contended that the entry tax provisions violate the right to free trade and commerce, guaranteed under the constitution.
