Recently, the Gujarat High Court examined whether a registered marriage certificate alone could confer the legal status of a Hindu marriage when the parties admittedly never performed the essential religious ceremonies prescribed under the Hindu Marriage Act.

The case arose from a challenge to a family court's refusal to declare the alleged marriage void despite clear admissions by the woman that no lawful marriage had ever been solemnised, prompting the Court to closely examine the legal significance of marriage registration vis-Ă -vis the mandatory requirement of solemnisation.
