This popped up as a memory today. I still feel the same way, even if my fundraising efforts are less ambitious than they used to be.
We'll be collecting toys for the Toy Appeal again this year so if you would like to make a contribution just let us know..

Why Barnardos?
I used to feel really angry when I would read a news report about another young teen remanded to a juvenile detention centre following a litany of escalating, initially petty, crime stretching back into early childhood or a homeless, pregnant teen turning to alcohol or drugs for comfort. I could never understand why no one had intervened before this child started down this self destructive route.
Every child is born with the possibility of fulfilling their full potential. They just need the help, guidance and support of friends and family as they face the challenges that life might throw at them. Sadly that support system is not always available, for whatever reason. I wasn’t comfortable in a society which allowed these children and their families to fall through the cracks. I just didn’t know what I could do to help change it.
That’s when I heard about the work of Barnardos Ireland not only as advocates for children rights in Ireland but also in offering practical support and advice to children and their families in facing the challenges which they are presented with. Whether those challenges arise through poverty, illness, bereavement or some other issue. While I am still not making a difference on my own I know that, through various fundraising efforts, I am part of a bigger picture which is making a difference.

Thanks to a couple of generous donations we were able to give our Toy Collection for Barnardos Ireland a great kick start. We had a ball! A big thank you to Stephen and Brian in Smyths Toys Carrickmines who arranged a generous discount and some lego stocking fillers, not to mention the cash donors!!!

It's not too late to contribute - we are collecting up to Thursday 15th December.

It's that time of year and once again we will be collecting toys as part of the Barnardos toy appeal.

If you feel you can help by purchasing one extra gift this year that would be great!

The gift guidelines are outlined below.
Gift Guidelines
• Gifts should be new.
• Practical gifts of pyjamas, socks, slippers, and dressing-gowns are very welcome.
• Think of teenagers! (12 to 15 years.) Presents like CDs, books, and DVDs are all welcome.
• Learning toys - such as arts and craft materials - make a great choice.
• To ensure that each child receives a gift of equal value, toys/gifts should be worth approximately €10 upwards.
• Gifts should be left unwrapped.

Some suggestions to help you choose toys for the age groups Barnardos work with:
Infants & Toddlers: Activity toys, pre-school toys
3-6 years: Character toys i.e. Props Pig and SpongeBob SquarePants, Soft toys, action toys
7-9 years: Board games and games in general. Dressing up outfits, books, cars.
10-15 years: Books, jewellery, games, music, toiletries, DVDs, clothes vouchers

If you think you can help please give us a shout and (if you are nearby)we can liase with you to collect your gift, otherwise we can try and find out where your nearest collection point is. The closing date is 16th December so we would need them by 14th December.
