It was a real pleasure to attend the 11th Maritime Law Conference of the Piraeus Bar Association, led by Professor Lia Athanasiou
I have had the privilege of attending every single conference since the very first one in 1992 — back then as a law student. More than thirty years later, it’s remarkable to see how our discipline continues to grow and adapt to new challenges.
This year’s conference stood out for its focus on the future of maritime law, with topics including:
🌍 Decarbonisation and new fuels
🤖 AI, data governance, and autonomous vessels
⚖️ ESG principles and state responsibilities
📜 The Beijing Convention and its implications
The discussions were thought-provoking and forward-looking — a true reflection of how maritime law must evolve alongside technology, environmental goals, and changing trade realities.
A big thank you to the organizers, most of them colleagues from the Piraeus Bar Association, speakers, from Greece and all over the world, and fellow participants for another excellent event.
