Did you know that inheritance tax (IHT) can significantly reduce the wealth passed on to your loved ones?
Many business owners have benefited from valuable inheritance tax reliefs. However, recent and proposed changes mean that more business assets may become exposed to inheritance tax, subject to available reliefs and allowances.
From April 2027, most pension fund balances are expected to form part of an individual's estate for inheritance tax purposes. In addition, where the pension holder dies after age 75, beneficiaries may also have to pay Income Tax when drawing benefits. In some cases, the combined tax burden can substantially reduce the value received by the next generation.
Many people are unaware that inheritance tax may apply not only to UK assets but also to overseas assets, depending on residence status, and personal circumstances. Property, investments, bank accounts, and other assets held abroad may need to be considered as part of a comprehensive estate planning strategy.
Consider the following questions:
• What could happen if I leave everything to my spouse and they later remarry? Could my assets ultimately pass outside my intended family line?
• What happens if I transfer all my assets to my children and they later divorce, become bankrupt, or face legal claims?
• Can I give my home to my children during my lifetime and avoid inheritance tax?
• Can I use trusts to minimise inheritance tax and protect family wealth?
• What happens if I lose mental capacity before putting a Will or Lasting Power of Attorney in place?
• Are my overseas assets protected and structured efficiently for inheritance tax purposes?
