Morning’s work in Burnham-on-Crouch: two water butts fitted to the downpipe, downpipe was previously buried into the stones so this has been raised up to utilise the stainless steel drain cover correctly and a bird box installed up on the shed.

The water butts are now collecting rainwater straight from the roof, ready for the garden. That saves on mains water and cuts down on hosepipe use. The bird box is up on the shed too, so the local garden birds have somewhere to shelter this winter. 🐦

Small jobs, but they make a real difference around the home and garden.

🚪 Door sticking since the weather turned?

It’s usually not the door’s fault.
Changes in humidity and temperature make wood swell and bind in the frame.

Before you reach for the plane:

1️⃣ Tighten any loose hinge screws first
2️⃣ Lightly sand the high spots that catch
3️⃣ Don’t take off too much, the door shrinks back once it dries out

Like for like garden tap replacement 🚰

Reports of the old one leaking, on closer inspection the nut was cracked causing a loose connection.

Decided to replace the elbow and tap fully using new flowmaster parts from Screwfix and new Hozelock UK hose connections.

Tackling a painting job this weekend? Work top to bottom to get a proper finish.

Prepare everything Properly first your painting is only as good as your preparation.

Remember the 5 P’s
Proper Preparation, Prevents Poor Performance.

Ceiling first, then walls, then wood work and skirting boards last. It stops drips and splatter landing on surfaces you’ve already finished, and gives you a much cleaner result.
Simple order, better finish. 👍

Finished off the tiling with the grouting today, and it’s really brought the whole kitchen together. Clean, crisp lines around the bevelled metro tile, neatly finished against the bespoke timber window ledge and matched up nicely with the new sink and tap.
It’s a small job, but it makes a big difference to how a kitchen feels day to day

🧱 Fill Hairline Cracks Before You Paint!

A quick filler job now stops small cracks reappearing through fresh paint later.

1️⃣ Clear out dust and loose debris from the crack first (you’ve got to make it worse before it gets better)
2️⃣ Push a flexible filler in until it sits level with the wall
3️⃣ Sand it smooth once fully dry

💡 Top Tip: Prime the bare filler before painting. It helps stops the patch showing through as a dull spot once painted over.

Splashback tiled and ready for grouting ✅🏡

Finished this one off last night at home.
White bevelled metro tiles in a brick bond, run around the sink and up to the window to match the other side of the kitchen. Completes the look with the custom window ledge😮‍💨

Spacers stay in overnight while the adhesive cures, then it’s grouting next which is always the bit that pulls the whole thing together.

Proof you don’t need a full refit to completely change how a kitchen feels.

🔥 Bleed Your Radiators Before Winter!

Cold spots at the top of a radiator usually mean trapped air is stopping it heating properly.
Bleeding it takes five minutes.

1️⃣ Turn the heating off and let the radiator cool down first
2️⃣ Open the valve anti-clockwise with a radiator key until you hear hissing
3️⃣ Close it as soon as water starts to trickle out

💡 Top Tip: Check your boiler pressure afterwards and top it up if it’s dropped — bleeding radiators often lowers it slightly.

As the dreaded English wet weather is quickly returning make the most of the mild, dry days for treating timber before the full autumn rain sets in.

1️⃣ Check posts for rot or movement
2️⃣ Reapply preserver every 1–2 years
3️⃣ You’ll need 24–48hrs of dry weather after treating
