As a HR Consultant, I regularly draft policies and I am often asked what the best policies are to have in place. Other than the fundamental ones such as disciplinary and grievance and health and safety policies, the one policy that is sometimes neglected, but crucially important, is honesty.
As with any relationship, to achieve sound working relationships, open and honest communication between employers and staff are key drivers to a business’ success. The reason for this is, through honesty, respect is gained, followed very quickly by loyalty.
This then begs the question as to how this is achieved?
✅ Say what you mean and mean what you say – In essence, to build trust as an employer, you should keep your promises and where you are not able to (through conflicting pressures), be honest with your staff as to the reasons why.
✅ Own your mistakes – Mistakes are there to be learned from. However, the manner in which you rectify them is what really matters.
✅ Recognition – Give credit where credit is due. Ever heard the saying “teamwork, makes the dream work.” By praising staff for their achievements, instills confidence in them and shows respect for the work they do.
✅ Set boundaries – Boundaries are important. This is why HR policies are important.
✅ Give Respect – It goes without saying, that most commonly, if you give respect, you will gain respect.
✅ Be Flexible – Being a business owner, you have to be prepared for the unexpected. Providing your staff with flexibility (whether that be staff working from home or dealing childcare issues), is likely to gain their trust and in turn their commitment to your business.
✅ Be Thankful – “The roots of all goodness lie in the soil of appreciation for goodness.” –Dalai Lama. Appreciation costs nothing! We often underestimate, how impactful gratitude is. A simple ‘Thank You’ can go a long way and is powerful, as it helps show employees that your value them and builds trusting relationships.
Honesty, therefore, really is the best policy.
