🚩 TRADES RED FLAGS — THINGS HOMEOWNERS SHOULD WATCH OUT FOR

I’ll probably get some stick for this one 😅 but I think it’s important for homeowners to know what to look out for when choosing a tradesperson.

❌ “I can start straight away” + a ridiculously cheap price
Good tradespeople are usually busy and know the value of their time and experience. Cheap doesn’t always mean good value.

❌ Can’t show examples of previous work or happy customers
A reputable tradesperson should be able to show you what they’ve done before and provide genuine reviews or references.

❌ Promises the world before the job starts
Be careful of anyone making big promises just to win the job. What matters is what actually gets delivered.

❌ Asking for a large deposit “to cover costs”
In my opinion, you shouldn’t be handing over huge amounts upfront. A reasonable deposit to secure a booking or payment towards specific materials is one thing — a large payment before any work has started is another.

I’m not saying there aren’t good tradespeople on the various trade-checking platforms, because there definitely are. But I’ve personally heard plenty of horror stories from customers who have used them.

👍 Do your research. Ask for recommendations. Check genuine reviews. Look at previous work.

A common thing I hear from customers after a bad experience with another tradesperson is:

“I should have checked them properly before going ahead.”

There are far too many cowboys out there, and unfortunately they make things harder for the genuine, hard-working tradespeople and businesses who are trying to build a good reputation.

So before you choose someone based purely on price, do your homework. 🧐

A good tradesperson might not always be the cheapest — but you should know exactly what you’re paying for. 👍
