We’re delighted to announce Carolyn Evans as our first guest speaker at our upcoming conference, Future-Proofing the Road Transport Industry.

Carolyn qualified as a solicitor in 2004 and began her career in criminal defence before moving into regulatory and transport law. She went on to advise and prosecute on behalf of the DVSA, gaining valuable insight from both prosecution and defence perspectives. Carolyn later built a strong national reputation representing operators, transport managers and professional drivers at Public Inquiries before Traffic Commissioners across the UK, as well as in appeals before the Upper Tribunal. She is the Founder of C E Transport Law Ltd and also serves as a Legal Member and Board Member of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.

What will Carolyn be speaking about?
• The key themes emerging repeatedly from Public Inquiries
• What those cases reveal about recurring compliance weaknesses across the industry
• Why traditional compliance systems are often failing operators
• How governance and oversight can be modernised to meet future challenges
• Moving from reactive defence to a more strategic, prevention-led approach

A thought-provoking and practical opening session, focused on learning the lessons Public Inquiries continue to teach the industry — and how to apply them going forward.

I’ve been called to a Public Inquiry. Do I really need a solicitor?

As operators receive the dreaded call up letter from the Traffic Commissioners office, they often find themselves asking whether they really need professional help. With the inevitable stress and time involved in the process people often say to me “I’m just going to go down there and admit it all”. Is this going to be a productive approach?

As soon as the public hearing appears on the ‘applications and decisions’ portal, those required to appear before the Traffic Commissioner are inundated with marketing literature from solicitors and other professionals offering their services. This creates another level of complexity. How should operators choose who to represent them when there is such a vast array of solicitors and professionals out there to choose from? What will it cost and are these people going to make a material difference to the outcome anyway?

I have put together a blog with my top 3 common questions and answers to help operators work their way through this difficult decision.
