37 years in the NHS and suspended by the GMC for caring too much 😢

Dr Diana Warner, a retired GP with 37 years of NHS service, has been suspended by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service for her role in 3 nonviolent climate protests that resulted in custodial prison sentences.

Her tribunal was convened at the request of the GMC and is the second such tribunal for a medical doctor for participating in nonviolent climate protest. A third tribunal for a working GP is scheduled for February 2025.

In her defence Dr Warner cited the scale of the climate health emergency, the evidence for civil resistance, the responsibilities of a doctor to act to protect the health of their patients, and the failure of the GMC to act on its primary role to protect the public.

Given the scale of the climate health emergency and the failure of institutions like the GMC to take appropriate action, it seems likely that health professionals will continue to take direct action to protect the health of their patients. In Dr Warner’s words, “...there is an institutional lack of insight into the scale, complexity and urgency of the climate crisis and its health impacts. These are clearly supported by the science and by the reality we are seeing around us, but not acknowledged by the GMC.”
