Our Civil Liberties team continues to receive feedback about the support and care provided to clients throughout their cases. This week, we’re sharing feedback about Alice See and Navjot Kaur Kahlon.

After representing a family at the inquest into the death of their son, the family shared the following:

"Alice and Navjot represented us at the inquest for our son. They provided compassionate, considerate and professional support at the lowest point of our lives in what was a harrowing process. They ensured that our concerns were heard by the coroner and that failings in care were exposed. We are grateful for their help and firmly believe that we would not have got the outcome we wanted without them."

Alice is a Solicitor in our Civil Liberties team and specialises in actions against the police and state authorities. Since joining GT Stewart in 2023, she has brought a strong commitment to civil liberties work and supporting families seeking accountability. Navjot joined GT Stewart in 2024 after gaining experience across Family Law and Wills & Probate work. Her commitment to helping vulnerable clients access justice led her to join the Civil Liberties team, where she works closely with solicitors to support clients through complex and sensitive cases.

GT Stewart Walking for Justice at the London Legal Walk 2026

We are pleased to once again be taking part in the London Legal Walk on Tuesday 9 June 2026, joining thousands of others from across the legal sector to walk for access to justice.

The London Legal Walk, organised by the London Legal Support Trust, is the largest fundraising event in the legal calendar. Each year, more than 15,000 walkers come together to raise vital funds for free legal advice charities on the frontline, working to support some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

The need for free legal help with debt, benefits, housing, asylum, and domestic violence is greater than ever. Many people across the UK cannot afford legal support and are at risk of going without justice when they need it most. These charities play a crucial role in helping individuals facing these issues, ensuring access to free legal advice remains available.

We are proud to return again this year to support the causes at the heart of our work. Every step we take and every penny we raise brings us closer to a community where justice and support are accessible to all. If you would like to support us, please donate here: https://londonlegalsupporttrust.enthuse.com/pf/gt-stewart-2026.

We are proud to once again be sponsoring the Youth Justice Legal Centre (YJLC) Summit, taking place on Tuesday 30th June 2026 at King’s College London.

The Summit brings together leading practitioners, lawyers, the judiciary and policymakers to challenge practice and drive change across the youth justice system. This year’s theme, “More Harm Than Good – Children in the Criminal Legal System,” comes at a key moment, with accreditation changes and Ministry of Justice reforms already shaping practice.

Leading voices from across the sector will explore how practice can evolve and improve outcomes for children, including how legal professionals can reduce harm caused by the system and promote more effective alternatives. Partner and Head of Youth Crime at GT Stewart, Mel Stooks, will be speaking alongside a number of key figures, including Jake Richards MP, Dr Patrick Williams, and Kirsty Brimelow KC.

Key sessions will examine key issues in the youth justice system, including remand and safeguarding, the use of youth culture evidence in court, the age of criminal responsibility, out-of-court resolutions, police contact, and what effective child-centred legal representation looks like in practice. The Summit will equip practitioners with practical insight to support their work with children in the criminal justice system.

GT Stewart Solicitors Client Found Not Guilty of Drive-By Shooting

We represented a teenage client who was charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

A mother of two was shot outside a Pentecostal church in Willesden, north London, during a large memorial gathering. The prosecution alleged that our client had travelled in a vehicle used during the incident and was most likely the shooter. Our client denied being in the car and maintained that he had remained elsewhere at the time of the shooting.

The defence case was one of mistaken identity. We submitted that he was not one of the three men alleged to have travelled in the car to commit the offences. Preparation involved detailed analysis of the prosecution evidence, including phone and cell-site data, gunshot residue, ballistics and CCTV footage. We instructed a number of experts, including Intermediary Amanda Lynch and Stuart Banks of Digital Forensics Consultancy Ltd.

Following an eleven-week trial before Mrs Justice McGowan DBE at the Central Criminal Court, the jury unanimously acquitted our client of all charges. Two of the four men accused were found guilty.

Our client was represented by Supervising Solicitor, Claire Dissington who instructed in house barrister, Adrian Rohard and Giles Cockings KC of Garden Court Chambers.

On Tuesday 9th June 2026, Housing Solicitor Thea Grattidge will be speaking at the Shared Health Foundation's Homeless Families Conference: Dare to Hope.

With more than 176,000 homeless children currently living in temporary accommodation across England, the conference comes at a crucial time. She will be discussing guidance recently drafted by GT Stewart Solicitors, in conjunction with Impact on Urban Health and Doughty Street Chambers, which addresses meeting the housing needs of neurodivergent children in temporary accommodation. Harry Charalambous and Louise Abiodun from our City of London Criminal Defence Team recently received some incredible feedback from a client after their Crown Court case concluded with a Not Guilty verdict. They said:

“Solicitor Harry Charalambous, my incredible paralegal Louise Abiodun, and the exceptional team of barristers who stood beside me throughout my Crown Court case. Because of their unwavering commitment, extraordinary professionalism, and tireless hard work, I was found Not Guilty — a moment that has changed my life forever. During one of the darkest and most frightening periods of my life, they became a source of strength, reassurance, and hope.

From the very beginning, Louise Abiodun showed immense compassion, patience, and dedication, always making sure I felt supported and informed throughout the entire process. Her kindness and constant reassurance meant more to me and my family than words can describe. Harry Charalambous demonstrated exceptional expertise, determination, and confidence in handling my case, while the barristers fought passionately and fearlessly for justice in court. Their preparation, attention to detail, and belief in me gave my family hope when we needed it most.

Watching this remarkable team work with such integrity and commitment filled my parents and me with immense respect and admiration. The relief, happiness, and peace we felt after hearing the Not Guilty verdict is something we will never forget, and it simply would not have been possible without them. People like Harry Charalambous, Louise Abiodun, and their team do far more than simply practise law — they change lives, protect the innocent, and restore faith during the most difficult moments imaginable. The work they do is truly noble and deserves the highest praise. My family and I will remain eternally grateful for everything they have done for us. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone seeking outstanding legal representation. Truly exceptional professionals and even better human beings.”

Partner and Head of Youth Crime, Mel Stooks, recently featured alongside Angus Jones from HMIP on the latest Transform Justice podcast episode, “Do the children on remand need to be there?”, which is now live.

The podcast explores how many children who are remanded do not need to be there, and that in many cases this is unnecessary. It also raises serious concerns that the settings in which children are held while awaiting trial are not always the right places for them to be.

In the episode, Mel discusses the realities of children being remanded into custody and the lasting impact the system can have on vulnerable young people, particularly in the earliest stages of contact with the criminal justice system.

She explains that many children in the criminal justice system have vulnerabilities and additional needs that mean they rely heavily on routine and clear expectations. Without this, the sensory environment can become overwhelming.

Mel also highlights that the places children are held while awaiting trial are simply ‘not conducive to their welfare’. For many, the experience of custody begins before they even reach a Young Offender Institution, following time spent in police cells - already experiencing significant disruption and harm.

The episode offers insight into the realities faced by children in the youth justice system and the challenges in ensuring custody is only used where absolutely necessary. Listen to the full episode here: https://pod.fo/e/41fbb1.

Court of Appeal Conviction Quashed Following CCRC Referral

On 14 May 2026, GT Stewart Solicitors successfully represented an appellant whose conviction was referred to the Court of Appeal by the Criminal Cases Review Commission on the basis that there was no jurisdiction to hear one of the counts, as it involved alleged conduct committed outside the UK.

The conviction occurred at a time when there was no legislation in place permitting a trial in England.

The Prosecution opposed the appeal based on the potential retrospective effect of a later statute. The Court of Appeal disagreed and quashed the conviction.

The Court also decided that it had jurisdiction under s.9 Criminal Appeal Act 1995 to quash the conviction and rejected the Prosecution’s submission that it needed to sit as a Divisional Court if the count on the indictment was deemed to be a nullity.

Lady Chief Justice Carr gave the judgment of the Court.

Partner and Senior Solicitor, Greg Stewart and Paralegal, Matthew Ronchetti of GT Stewart Solicitors instructed Counsel, Tom Wainwright of Garden Court Chambers. Neither GT Stewart nor Tom acted at the Crown Court proceedings.

Tom was thanked by the LCJ for his excellent written and oral submissions.
