In an explosive undercover investigation, BBC has exposed a shadow industry of rogue immigration advisers and organisations in the UK coaching people to fabricate LGBTQ+ asylum claims for profit. This is more than just a crime; it is a chilling betrayal. These predators are not just manipulating the system, they are scavenging off the very protections designed to save lives, treating human rights like a lucrative black market.

The monitisation of identity is a recurring nightmare with devastating consequences. Millions of LGBTQ+ people are living through hell, facing state-sanctioned torture and systemic abuse in many countries where their very existence is a crime. In 65 countries same-sex relations still remain criminalised while in at least 12 countries it could carry a death penalty.

We applaud the BBC’s investigative team for their relentless work in bringing this shadow industry into the light.

Sri Lanka’s move to enforce a zero-tolerance policy on corporal punishment in schools comes after years of court rulings, policy shifts, and ongoing public debate about discipline in education.

A key moment in this legal journey was the Fundamental Rights case where a 15-year-old student suffered permanent hearing damage after being slapped by a teacher. The Court found this amounted to a violation of Article 11 of the Constitution (cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment) and held that the teacher, school, and State had all failed in their duty to protect the child’s fundamental rights. This case is widely recognised for strengthening the principle that corporal punishment cannot be justified as discipline in schools.

In 2021, the Supreme Court further reinforced this position, confirming that corporal punishment in schools is unconstitutional.

Between 2024 and 2025, Cabinet approved legal reforms to formally prohibit corporal punishment, although the process faced delays and revisions. During this period, there was also public and institutional pushback, particularly from sections of teacher unions and members of the public who raised concerns about classroom discipline and the practical implications of enforcement.

Despite these debates, the Ministry of Education has now issued a 2026 directive reinforcing a strict zero-tolerance policy on both physical and psychological punishment in schools, signalling a clearer shift toward child protection, dignity, and non-violent forms of discipline.

The extraction of natural resources from Nepal’s Chure Hills has led to severe groundwater depletion, leaving marginalised communities struggling to access clean drinking water. Many are forced to trek long distances in search for water, a burden that falls largely on women.

Residents from the most affected areas in the Terai region have shared their challenges and are calling on the government to ensure access to clean drinking water, a right guaranteed by the Constitution.
Through strategic litigation, iProbono is working to amplify these voices and support communities in securing their rights.

Having led our Sri Lanka program with fierce dedication, Shevindri has been at the forefront of defending human rights and seeking justice for the LGBTI+ community, survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, and other marginalised groups.

As an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, Shevindri brings a wealth of legal expertise. From overseeing complex litigation to designing legal trainings that turn community members into advocates, her contribution to iProbono has been immense. She doesn’t just manage programs, she empowers people.

Recently, Sri Lanka signed a letter of intent to join the Global Charter of Child Care reform. This is a significant step toward rethinking how we protect vulnerable children.

In Sri Lanka, thousands of children live in residential care, many with at least one living parent. Separation is often driven by poverty, crisis, or lack of support, not orphanhood.

By joining the Charter, Sri Lanka is committing to:
1. Strengthening families
2. Preventing unnecessary separation
3. Promoting safe, family-based care
4. Moving away from institutionalisation

Reform must go beyond policy, it must ensure protection systems work, justice is accessible, and families are supported before separation happens.
Every child deserves to grow up safe, loved, and supported.

Hear from our South Asia Regional Manager, Shevindri Manuel, as she reflects on the Legal Aid Clinic held in Kotagala, Hatton, in the Central Province as part of the Access to Justice program.

The clinic offered free legal advice to tea estate workers on housing rights, sexual and gender-based violence, and labour issues.

More than 20 community members attended the session, seeking guidance and support on issues that directly affect their lives and livelihoods. For most of them it was their first direct interaction with a legal professional.

We believe that initiatives like these are an important step towards making justice more accessible to the communities that need it most.

Justice becomes real when communities are empowered to claim it.
