Intervention? Nah, invasion and I’ll prove it.
After writing my piece on the coup, some Turks took the opportunity, even though they were not mentioned even once in my condemnation of the Junta and those who joined them, to tell me that the Turks invasion was actually intervention.
So let’s get some facts.
The Turkish Cypriots were 18% of the islands population, they now occupy almost 40% of our homeland. Dektash actually admitted in a very famous interview, in which he was grinning as he was saying, that ,yes he may have ‘instigated’ some of the bombings against his own people. So let’s start from there.
As I was part of the Missing People’s Group I have some hard facts and you can decide whether it was an intervention or not:
1619 went missing, apart from the ones that were found dead, shot, tortured during the war and were not ‘missing’.
Out of those 1619 26 were under the age of 16, 20 young babies/boys and 6 little girls. Let me enlighten you to one particular 7 year old boy who was hit by shrapnel and a Turkish doctor told his mother not to worry and he would look after him; his mother never saw him again. I ask, what did that child ever do to deserve that kind of intervention?
315 people, 267 men and 58 women, were over the age of 60, most in their 70’s and 80’s; what possible harm could these, mostly farmers and villagers have done against the soldiers that so obviously killed them? Is that intervention or murder?
One woman I remember so well, her name was Maria, stayed behind in her village as she was blind and she told her family to run as the Turks were coming. She was one of the first women to be found through DNA many decades later. She had been shot through the back of her head. Intervention for what? For putting her family first so she wouldn’t be a burden to them?
This week, at last, recognition of the women r***d and tortured by the Turkish army through the Human Rights assembly; women are always an easy target, was this part of saving the lives of the Turkish Cypriots?
Most of us have no problem with the Turkish Cypriots, most of us acknowledge their rights to live peacefully in their and our island but covering up the atrocities as ‘intervention’ is far fetched. 200,000 Greek Cypriots were displaced and their homes stolen.
Yes, assist, defend innocent people but this went far beyond and certainly was over the top and clearly an invasion, full stop.
