Did you catch this week's BBC Panorama documentary on the Child Maintenance Service (CMS)? It's raised a lot of questions about how well the system works for separated parents.

Here's what we'd add: CMS matters, and it's there for a reason, particularly where there's domestic abuse or it isn't safe to deal with an ex-partner directly. It's also there if you simply can't agree. But it can take 4 to 12 weeks just to get payments arranged. That's a long time to wait when your child needs support now.

We talk a lot about the sadness and the anger of separation. We talk much less about the shame.

For comedian Jess Robinson, shame was the overwhelming feeling. Not just about the end of her marriage, but about having stayed, and about being the person everyone saw as strong – the one who'd always said 'I wouldn't do that, I'd never take that'.

Emergencies don't wait for the paperwork to be sorted. If your child had a medical emergency today, would you and your ex-partner know how to reach each other and act quickly?

The calmest thing you can do is agree a plan while you're separating, before you ever need it. That way, if the worst happens, it doesn't add to the panic.

Can AI write your consent order? Not this bit, no – and it's worth understanding why.

A consent order is the document that settles how a couple divide their finances, and it's binding once the court approves it. So it needs to be right, and it needs to be right for your particular situation.

As Lucy puts it in this episode: 'AI is a little bit like a Labrador, so it likes to try and please you. That's the temptation of using it, because you like what it says – but occasionally it can get it quite wrong.'

That's the useful thing to hold on to. AI is genuinely helpful for understanding the process, getting your head round the terminology and working out what to ask. The drafting and the checking is where you want an expert who's seen a lot of these.
